How to Dry Oranges to Make Your Home Smell Good 🎄

This is my second time drying oranges, and I finally nailed it! They smell so good that I placed them everywhere.

The trick is to let them dry slowly with low heat. I set the temperature to 200°F and flipped them every hour for four hours. After drying, you can place them in a decorative bowl, a jar, or use them as ornaments for the tree.

For the jar, I added a fabric cover to let the scent out while keeping it safe from dust. I used a jute ribbon to secure it and added some small flowers for decoration. This could also be a great complementary gift idea for the holidays.

... Read moreHey everyone! So, you've seen how wonderful dried orange slices can make your home smell and look, especially during the holidays. But getting those perfectly thin slices? That's definitely a crucial first step that can make all the difference in your final result. I remember struggling with this part myself, so I wanted to share my best tips for achieving those beautiful, translucent slices that dry evenly and look fantastic. First things first, choosing the right oranges is key! While any orange can work, I find that navel oranges or even mandarins for smaller, delicate slices are perfect because they have fewer seeds and a good, solid structure. Look for firm, ripe oranges without any soft spots. Give them a good wash and pat them completely dry before you start. This helps with a clean cut and prevents any extra moisture from interfering with the slicing. Now, for the actual slicing technique. Many people wonder whether to use a knife or a mandoline. Both can work, but each has its pros and cons. If you're using a knife, a very sharp chef's knife or a serrated knife is your best friend. A dull knife will just squish the orange! Place your orange on a sturdy wooden cutting board. I like to slice off both ends of the orange first to create a flat, stable surface. Then, stand the orange upright and carefully make thin, even cuts across the width. The goal is to get slices that are about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Consistency is key here; if some slices are thicker than others, they'll dry at different rates, which can be frustrating. Take your time, and don't rush it. It might take a few tries to get the hang of it, but practice makes perfect! For those who have one, a mandoline slicer is an absolute game-changer for getting perfectly thinly sliced oranges. It ensures uniform thickness every single time, which is exactly what we want for even drying. Just be super careful when using a mandoline – those blades are incredibly sharp! Always use the safety guard to protect your fingers. Set your mandoline to a thin setting, usually around 2-3mm (about 1/8 inch), and glide your oranges across it. The consistency you get from a mandoline is unmatched, making your dried orange slices look professionally done. You'll have a beautiful array of uniform slices ready for the next step in no time. Once you have your beautifully thin orange slices, you can gently blot them with a paper towel to remove any excess juice before placing them on your baking sheet. This little trick helps speed up the drying process and prevents them from sticking. Getting this slicing step right truly sets you up for success, ensuring your dried oranges come out golden, fragrant, and ready to make your home smell absolutely incredible, or to adorn your holiday decor! Happy slicing!
