“How do you ADVOCATE for yourself?”

My last pregnancy was at the start of Covid which was interesting, to say the least. I had many highs and lows during that pregnancy which caused me to look at the medical environment differently. I experienced first hand the lack of empathy and care from medical providers at different visits. It was nothing short of the grace of God that I am here today to tell my testimony.

The doctors and other medical professionals would consistently dismiss my concerns and it nearly cost me my life. My children would have been without a mother for the rest of their lives. I was blessed to be able to have my family and friends advocate for me when I was not able to advocate for myself. After my medical trauma, I promised myself that I will not settle for mediocre care or medical providers. Please advocate for yourself.

... Read moreAdvocating for yourself in medical settings is crucial, especially when faced with dismissive healthcare professionals. Many patients experience being unheard or minimized, which can lead to serious health risks. To protect your well-being, it's important to prepare ahead of appointments by writing down your symptoms and concerns clearly. Bringing a trusted family member or friend can also provide additional support and help communicate your needs if you feel overwhelmed. If doctors or nurses dismiss your concerns, respectfully insist on further evaluation or ask for a second opinion. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about your diagnosis or treatment options, and request that all explanations are clear and thorough. Keeping detailed records of your medical visits, including dates, symptoms, and responses, can empower you to track your health and advocate effectively. Joining support groups related to your condition, such as birth trauma recovery communities, can offer emotional support and valuable advice from others who understand your experience. Remember, your health and life are paramount — you should never settle for mediocre care. By speaking up and demanding attentive and empathetic medical care, you contribute to better outcomes not just for yourself, but also raise awareness to improve healthcare environments for others.
