Be your own advocate in Residency 🌸🫶

Residency evaluations are an opportunity to reflect on your growth and highlight your strengths. Here’s how to advocate for yourself and make the most of them:

1️⃣ Know Your Achievements: Before the evaluation, review your work and achievements. Document specific examples where you've excelled, whether it’s in patient care, teamwork, or learning new skills.

2️⃣ Request Constructive Feedback: Show initiative by asking for feedback on areas for improvement. This demonstrates your commitment to learning and growth.

3️⃣ Set Clear Goals: Be proactive in discussing your career goals and aspirations. Use evaluations to align with your supervisors on skills you want to develop, such as leadership or advanced clinical knowledge.

4️⃣ Clarify Expectations: If you’re unclear about any feedback or expectations, ask for clarification. This ensures you’re on the right track and fully understand how to meet residency program goals.

5️⃣ Be Confident but Humble: While it’s important to advocate for yourself, balance it with humility. Acknowledge your weaknesses and show that you’re actively working to improve. Confidence comes from knowing your worth and how to grow.

Evaluations are a two-way conversation—use them to advocate for your development and shape your residency experience. 🌟

... Read moreI remember feeling completely overwhelmed during my residency. It felt like I was constantly swimming against the current, and the idea of advocating for myself during residency seemed like an extra burden, or even a risk. For a long time, I just kept my head down, hoping that hard work alone would be enough. But I quickly learned that it wasn't just about formal evaluations; it was about survival and growth in every aspect of my training. While the article focuses brilliantly on evaluations—and those 5 tips are absolutely gold for navigating those structured conversations—*self-advocacy in medicine residency* stretches far beyond formal reviews. It's about those daily interactions, protecting your well-being, and actively shaping your learning experience. I had to learn this the hard way, but I hope sharing my experiences can help you. One of the toughest lessons for me was learning to set boundaries, especially when it came to workload. There were countless times I felt stretched thin, juggling too many patients or consecutive shifts. I used to just power through, fearing I'd look weak or uncommitted if I spoke up. But I eventually realized that constantly overextending myself led directly to burnout, which not only harmed me but also compromised the quality of patient care I could provide. I started practicing how to politely yet firmly decline extra tasks when I was truly at my limit, or asking for help when I genuinely needed it. It wasn't easy, and it took courage, but learning to say 'no' (or 'not right now') was a game-changer for my mental health and overall effectiveness. Beyond just getting feedback, advocating for yourself means actively seeking out the learning you need. I remember wanting to gain more experience in a specific cardiac procedure. Instead of just waiting for an opportunity to arise, I proactively approached my attending physician, expressed my specific interest, and asked if I could shadow or assist more frequently on relevant cases. This proactive approach, much like the article's advice to 'Set Clear Goals,' helped me tailor my learning and build skills that directly aligned with my future career aspirations. It showed initiative and allowed me to take ownership of my education. Residency can be a high-stress environment, and sometimes that stress can spill over into team dynamics. I once found myself in a challenging situation with a seemingly unapproachable senior resident. Instead of letting the tension fester, which was my initial instinct, I remembered the advice to 'Request Constructive Feedback' but also to give it respectfully. I sought guidance from a trusted mentor first, and then, armed with specific examples, I approached the senior resident directly, focusing on the issue at hand rather than making it personal. It was incredibly uncomfortable, but it led to a much better and more collaborative working relationship. Being able to 'Be Confident but Humble' was crucial here – confident in my right to a respectful learning environment, yet humble and open to understanding their perspective. The biggest hurdle for me was fear – fear of looking incompetent, fear of being seen as 'difficult,' or fear of potential repercussions. But I started small. I began by making sure I could 'Know my achievements' not just for formal evaluations, but to remind myself of my capabilities and contributions daily. This internal validation gradually built my confidence. I also learned that articulating my needs clearly and professionally, rather than emotionally, was key. It's about presenting potential solutions, not just problems. Advocating for yourself during residency isn't just about surviving; it's about thriving. It teaches you invaluable communication skills, resilience, and ultimately helps you become the kind of physician you aspire to be—a confident, capable, and compassionate one. It’s an investment in your career and your well-being, ensuring you don't just complete residency, but truly grow through it.
