Parent of Children with Autism
Vulnerability
🤍 My Story: My daughter is 3 years old, She is smart, sweet, silly and my favorite person in the world. I prayed for her. She has been diagnosed with Autism and is currently nonverbal.
🤍 How I Felt: Before becoming a parent I remember rehearsing conversations I would have with my child and all the possible silly responses I would receive. My daughter then had plans to introduce me to the world of Autism and being a parent of a nonverbal child. She introduced me to the world of occupational therapy, speech therapy and Applied Behavioral analyst. I wouldn’t know what it’s like to be a parent of a child who isn’t A typical and I know we all have our challenges but I think I can speak for most parents of children with disabilities when I say this is extra hard work in every aspect. However not only has my daughter introduced me to a world of occupational therapy, speech therapy and ABA she had diligently and gracefully introduced to patience, consistency, genuinity and an abundance of love.
🤍 My Takeaways: I know you probably spend a lot of time wondering why or why not, you probably spend a lot of time wondering is it something you did during pregnancy that could have made your reality different, spend a lot of time wondering did your child actually say a word or was it just noise, will you child talk tomorrow or next year, will your next child have autism and nobody understands how hard your reality actually it. But we love our babies non the less. I really hope you consider how much you have gained and learned and grown while on this journey with your child. I know it feels lonely but you are doing an amazing job and you are doing the best you can. I see you. Stay motivated for baby❤️🩹💕🥰#autismstories #autismjourney #autismismysuperpower #autismsupportandawareness #nonverbal #autistic #autism #atypical #blackautisticcreator
Parenting a child with autism presents unique challenges and rewards. Understanding autism begins with recognizing that it's a spectrum, meaning every child's experience is distinct. Nonverbal children may communicate differently, which can be a source of frustration but also creativity. Therapy options like speech therapy, occupational therapy, and behavioral therapy are crucial in supporting communication and daily life skills. Engaging in community support through local autism groups or online platforms offers invaluable resources and emotional support for parents. It's also essential to celebrate small milestones - progress in communication or social interaction can profoundly impact both the child and parent. Encouraging self-advocacy and understanding individual needs fosters growth for both parent and child. Taking care of oneself is vital; connecting with other parents facing similar challenges helps in sharing tips and experiences, promoting collective resilience. Resources like educational workshops or therapy sessions can empower parents and increase understanding of autism, leading to better support for their children. It's a journey filled with ups and downs, but learning to appreciate every moment helps in creating a joyful environment for your child.
