Life w/ Kids autism edition

I love my girls 🥰

As mothers we wear many hats, we are trying our best. We are pulled in so many directions and have to give so much of ourselves for our children’s well being. As an special needs mom I sometimes feel overwhelmed the reality of my life isn’t always all smiles I have a lot of sleepless nights and tremendous amount anxiety but one thing I can say is I show up every day and my girls are happy and healthy and I thank God for keeping me going because being an autism mama ain’t for the weak this requires a special set of skills 😉💖

... Read moreBeing a mother to children with autism presents unique challenges that can be overwhelming. Parents often wear many hats—from advocate and educator to emotional support and caregiver. It's essential to seek out community support, whether through local groups or online platforms that cater specifically to autism parenting. This can provide much-needed camaraderie and advice from those who understand your situation. Many parents find solace in shared experiences, allowing them to better cope with the anxiety and sleepless nights that often accompany this journey. As autism advocates, parents can also educate themselves on the various therapies and resources that can help their children thrive, from speech therapy to social skills training. Among the many hats that mothers wear, finding time for self-care is crucial. This includes setting aside moments for oneself amidst the busyness of family life. Many find that simple activities such as walking, yoga, or even a quiet moment with a book can replenish their spirit and prepare them to handle the unique needs of their children. Furthermore, joining parent groups on social media can provide a virtual support network, allowing for the exchange of tips, ideas, and emotional support. Parenting is a journey filled with highs and lows; embracing the reality of this experience can foster resilience and lead to a deeper bond with your children.

I truly think that people with neurotypical children don't understand what it means to be able to move through life without thinking about the word accommodations. And why would they, right? But as someone who has an entire family that is either ADHD or autistic, we are always thinking about

Autism diagnosis in girls
Girls are still less often diagnosed with autism than boys. This made sense back in the day when we had less information, but I'm starting to wonder if it's not just the things in these slides anymore. I think it might have something to do with women and girls having less research done f

Identifying high masking autism
I often wonder how my autism was missed as a child. I stimmed repeatedly, was quiet and a bit standoffish, and struggled to understand communication. Although it is obvious to me now, it clearly was not as obvious to my pediatrician in the 90s. I may have had what I think as stereotypical autistic

Why ADHD and autism diagnoses matter
I thought I was autistic for a year or so before I was formally diagnosed. And as far as ADHD goes, I was pretty sure I had it for several years before I was evaluated. So, imagine my lack of surprise when I was dual evaluated for both and it was determined that I am indeed AuDHD. But something
