Season Finale
Lashae’s face twisted in confusion as the music from the party blasted around them. People danced, laughed, and waved cups in the air while she stared at the older man in disbelief.
“My mother never mentioned no brother,” Lashae said cautiously.
The man chuckled softly before taking a sip of his drink.
“She wouldn’t. Your mother and I stopped speaking years ago.”
Lashae folded her arms over her chest.
“So how you know who I am?”
“You look exactly like her. Same eyes too,” he answered. “Plus yuh name spread fast around Portmore after yuh grandmother passed years ago.”
Lashae felt a strange feeling settle in her stomach.
Her grandmother?
“Wait… you knew my grandmother too?”
The man nodded slowly.
“Of course. That was my mother.”
Lashae suddenly felt hot despite the night breeze. Her entire life she had thought her mother barely had family. Now this man was standing in front of her claiming to be her uncle like it was normal.
“What’s your name?” she finally asked.
“Desmond.”
She studied him carefully. The shape of his nose did resemble her mother’s a little. Even the gap between his teeth looked familiar.
“You lying,” Lashae muttered, though her voice lacked confidence.
Desmond laughed harder this time.
“Girl, what me ago gain from lying?”
Before Lashae could answer, another woman walked up beside them.
“Desmond, who dis pretty girl?” she asked.
“This is Paulette daughter.”
The woman’s eyes widened instantly.
“Paulette daughter?!”
Lashae’s heart skipped.
The woman grabbed Lashae’s hand gently.
“Oh my God… yuh really don’t know us.”
Now Lashae was completely overwhelmed. Just hours ago she had been trying to get Dominique out of her life. Now somehow she was standing in the middle of Jamaica finding family she never even knew existed.
Desmond looked at her seriously.
“Your mother ran from Jamaica for a reason, Lashae. And trust me… once yuh hear the story, yuh going understand everything.”
