Between her Lips & Lies Season Finale

The Jamaican breeze blew softly against Lashae’s skin as she adjusted the strap on her sundress. The ocean waves crashed behind her while music played faintly from the resort bar nearby. She was supposed to be relaxing. Supposed to be clearing her head.

Instead, Dominique was standing there holding a bouquet of flowers like some scene out of a movie.

Lashae blinked twice, genuinely caught off guard.

“So you popping up everywhere I’m at now?” she asked, folding her arms across her chest.

Dominique rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly before holding the flowers out. “Can you not start with me already?”

Lashae looked down at the bouquet then back up at her. “You flew to Jamaica, Dominique.”

“I needed to see you.”

“You needed to respect my space.”

Dominique sighed heavily. She had on crocs, loose shorts, and a plain t-shirt, looking completely underdressed compared to Lashae, who looked effortlessly beautiful with her jewelry shining against her skin and her grey ponytail swaying in the wind.

“You blocked my number,” Dominique said. “What else was I supposed to do?”

“Take the hint.”

That answer made Dominique’s face tighten.

“Lashae, c’mon.”

“No, you c’mon,” Lashae snapped quietly. “You disappear for weeks, act emotionally unavailable, then think showing up with flowers fixes everything.”

“It’s not just flowers,” Dominique said. “It’s me trying.”

“You should’ve tried when I was crying to you on the phone.”

Dominique went silent.

Lashae could tell she felt guilty, but guilt and change were two different things.

“You really tracked me down in another country,” Lashae said with disbelief, shaking her head. “That’s crazy.”

“I’m in love with you.”

“You say that now because I stopped begging.”

Dominique stepped closer. “That’s not fair.”

“What wasn’t fair was me loving somebody who only showed up when it was convenient.”

The tension between them sat heavy despite the beautiful scenery around them. Tourists laughed nearby, couples walked hand in hand, and reggae played in the distance, but the energy between Lashae and Dominique was anything but peaceful.

Dominique lowered the flowers slowly. “I know I hurt you.”

“You did.”

“I’m trying to fix it.”

Lashae looked at her for a long moment before sighing deeply.

“You don’t fly to Jamaica to fix somebody’s heart, Dominique. You fix it with consistency.”

“I needed time away from you. To get you off my mind,” Lashae confessed quietly.

Dominique’s expression cracked almost instantly.

“Lashae—”

“Stop… trying,” Lashae interrupted firmly. “I no longer want it, Dominique. I wanted you then. Now I don’t.”

The words came out calm, almost too calm, and somehow that hurt Dominique more than yelling ever could.

Lashae shrugged her shoulders lightly as the wind blew against her dress. “It’s about myself and my life now. I love it here so much, I just might get a visa and stay here.”

Dominique stared at her like she had just spoken another language.

“You serious?”

“Dead serious.”

“You just gone leave everything behind?” Dominique asked, her voice beginning to shake. “Your family? Your life? Me?”

Lashae laughed softly without humor. “You acting like I got something waiting for me back home besides heartbreak and stress.”

Dominique’s eyes watered instantly. “So that’s it? You throwing seven years away?”

Lashae’s face hardened.

“Correction,” she said. “You threw that away.”

Dominique looked down, gripping the bouquet tighter as tears finally slid down her face. Tourists passed by them without noticing the emotional storm happening right there near the beach path.

“I hate when you do that,” Dominique muttered.

“Do what?”

“Act like I never loved you.”

Lashae sighed deeply before looking out toward the ocean. “No, Dominique. That’s the sad part. I know you loved me.”

Dominique looked up hopefully.

“But love without effort will destroy somebody.”

That hope faded just as quickly.

“You don’t understand how hard it’s been without you,” Dominique admitted.

“And you don’t understand how peaceful it’s been finding myself again,” Lashae replied.

The silence between them became heavy.

Dominique wiped beneath her eyes angrily. “So what? You just done with me?”

Lashae hesitated for the first time.

Part of her still loved Dominique deeply. Seven years didn’t disappear overnight. But she finally understood that loving somebody wasn’t enough reason to keep suffering.

“I’m done begging for the bare minimum,” Lashae said honestly.

Dominique swallowed hard, trying not to completely break down in front of her.

“You really changing on me.”

“No,” Lashae corrected softly. “I’m finally choosing me.”

... Read moreReading the season finale of Between Her Lips & Lies truly resonated with me, especially the poignant moment between Lashae and Dominique in Jamaica. The vivid setting—the ocean waves, the soft island breeze, the distant reggae music—complements the intense emotions they share. It’s a powerful reminder that love isn’t just about grand gestures, like showing up with flowers in a foreign country, but about consistent effort and respect for each other's space and feelings. What struck me most deeply was Lashae’s journey toward self-love and choosing her peace over past pain. So often, we cling to relationships out of habit or fear of loneliness, but her decision to prioritize herself and embrace a new life in Jamaica speaks to a powerful shift in mindset. It encouraged me to reflect on the importance of recognizing when love, without effort and respect, can become damaging rather than healing. For readers who appreciate stories rooted in the LGBTQ+ community, this finale is especially meaningful. It departs from cliché endings and instead presents a raw, authentic look at complicated love and growth. The hashtags #lesbiancommunity and #lesbianbooks emphasize the representation and inclusivity that enrich this story.
