Sapphire blinked at Audrey from across the retreat cabin, the wine glass in her hand frozen halfway to her lips.
“Hold up,” Sapphire said slowly, narrowing her eyes. “I’ve known you for years, and not once have I seen you bring a man around. Not one boyfriend. Not one ex. Nothing.”
Lola sat up straighter on the couch. “You know what? She’s right.”
Tina frowned. “I never thought about that.”

“Alright. Love you.”

The call ended.
The silence lasted approximately two seconds.
Sapphire leaned forward.
“…Are you sure Shane doesn’t have an Adam’s apple?”
Lola lost it.
“I was trying not to say it!” Lola cackled. “But I thought it!”
Audrey blinked at them.
“No.”
“You positive?” Sapphire asked carefully. “Like…one hundred percent positive?”

“Ladies.”
Tina wiped tears from laughing.
“I’m sorry,” Tina said. “It’s just her voice caught me off guard.”
“It was deep,” Sapphire defended.

“It was sexy,” Tina added before quickly shaking her head. “Respectfully.”
Audrey folded her hands in her lap.
“I have a wife,” she said solemnly.
The room quieted.

“I have a wife,” Audrey repeated. “Not a husband. Not a secret man hiding in a closet somewhere.” Her eyes moved between each of them. “A wife. Shane loves me, takes care of me, checks on me, annoys me when I leave dishes in the sink, and steals the blankets every single night.”

“And before any of you ask, yes, she opens jars for me.”
Lola snorted.

“You know what?” she said. “I can’t even joke about it anymore.”
Audrey raised an eyebrow.
“Why?”

“Because every time you talk about Shane, you sound…happy.”
The laughter faded into something quieter.
