A.Powell’s Married Sistas
The police officer listened carefully as the three women stood in the hallway outside Tina’s hospital room.
Sapphire’s eyes were swollen from crying.
“So respectfully, my friend is in the hospital due to her abusive husband!” Sapphire cried. “Every single time she covered for him. Every bruise had an excuse. Every black eye had a story.”
Lola wiped her face with the back of her hand.
“What can be done about this?!” she wailed. “Look at her! She’s got fractured ribs, a fractured arm, and God knows what else. He could’ve killed her!”
Audrey stood quietly beside them, her jaw clenched.
The officer nodded.
“We are opening an investigation,” he explained. “Because of the severity of her injuries, this is being treated very seriously. We will need a statement from Tina when she’s medically able to provide one.”
“What if she’s scared?” Audrey asked.
“Many victims are,” the officer admitted. “But photographs have already been taken of her injuries. Medical reports are being documented. Those things matter.”
Sapphire shook her head.
“She loved that man,” she whispered. “She stayed because she loved him.”
“And he damn near killed her because of it,” Audrey replied coldly.
The officer scribbled notes.
“Has there been a history of violence?”
The three women exchanged looks.
Lola laughed bitterly.
“History? Officer, there has been a whole damn textbook.”
“Years,” Sapphire added. “Years of controlling her. Isolating her. Putting his hands on her.”
“Do you have proof?” the officer asked.
Audrey immediately pulled out her phone.
“I got text messages.”
“So do I,” Sapphire said.
Lola nodded.
“I got pictures she sent me and begged me not to show anybody.”
The officer’s expression became more serious.
“I’d like copies of all of that.”
Just then, a nurse stepped into the hallway.
“Only one visitor at a time,” she said softly. “She’s awake.”
The three women froze.
“Tina’s awake?” Sapphire whispered.
The nurse nodded.
Suddenly the hallway went silent.
After everything she had endured, after all the lies she told to protect her husband, after all the excuses she made—
Tina was finally awake.
And for the first time, she would have to decide whether she was going to protect him…
or tell the truth.
The three women looked at each other.
For years they had begged Tina to leave.
For years they had listened to excuses.
“He didn’t mean it.”
“He was stressed.”
“It wasn’t that bad.”
And now Tina was lying in a hospital bed fighting through pain medication and broken bones.
“One of y’all should go first,” Audrey said quietly.
“No,” Sapphire replied immediately. “We all go.”
The nurse hesitated before nodding.
“Just don’t overwhelm her.”
The women slowly entered the room.
The steady beeping of the heart monitor filled the silence.
Tina looked awful.
Her face was swollen.
One eye was nearly shut.
Bandages wrapped around her arm while her ribs were heavily supported.
Lola immediately began crying again.
“Oh my God.”
Tina managed a weak smile.
“Girl, stop crying.”
“Stop crying?” Lola laughed through tears. “Look at you!”
Sapphire carefully approached the bedside.
“How you feeling?”
“Like I got hit by a truck.”
Nobody laughed.
The joke wasn’t funny because it wasn’t far from the truth.
Audrey stood at the foot of the bed.
Her arms were crossed.
“Tina.”
Tina slowly looked at her.
“Yeah?”
“You done lying for him?”
The room became quiet.
Sapphire looked at Audrey.
“Audrey—”
“No,” Audrey interrupted. “Because we been doing this for years.”
Tina stared at the ceiling.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then make me understand,” Audrey shot back.
Tina’s eyes filled with tears.
“I loved him.”
“You still do?” Audrey asked.
Tina didn’t answer.
That answer alone told everyone what they needed to know.
Lola sat down heavily in a chair.
“Girl, love ain’t supposed to look like this.”
Tina finally broke.
A sob escaped her chest.
“He wasn’t always like this.”
“Maybe not,” Sapphire said gently. “But he is now.”
The tears came harder.
The weight of years seemed to crash down on Tina all at once.
“I thought if I loved him enough…” she whispered.
Sapphire grabbed her hand.
“No.”
“I thought if I stayed…”
“No.”
“I thought if I forgave him…”
“No,” Audrey said firmly.
Tina cried harder.
The nurse quietly stepped out and closed the door behind her.
For the first time, Tina wasn’t defending her husband.
She wasn’t making excuses.
She wasn’t protecting him.
She was simply broken.
After several minutes she finally whispered something that made the entire room freeze.
“He said if I ever left him…”
Nobody moved.
Tina swallowed hard.
“He said he’d kill me.”
The room went silent.
Sapphire’s hand tightened around hers.
Lola’s mouth fell open.
Even Audrey’s expression changed.
“Tina…” Sapphire whispered.
“He said he’d kill me, and then he’d kill anybody helping me.”
A cold feeling settled over the room.
Suddenly this wasn’t just about abuse.
It was about survival.
Then there was a knock at the hospital door.
Everyone turned.
A uniformed officer stood there.
His expression was grim.
“Ms. Tina?”
Tina’s heart immediately began racing.
“Yes?”
The officer glanced at the women before looking back at her.
“We attempted to locate your husband.”
Nobody breathed.
“And?”
The officer sighed.
“His house is empty.”
The room fell silent.
“His car is gone.”
Sapphire felt her stomach drop.
“What does that mean?” Lola asked.
The officer looked directly at Tina.
“It means your husband knew we’d be looking for him.”
And somewhere outside that hospital…
her husband was already on the run.
