A.Powell’s Married Sistas

The chatter at the table died down the moment Audrey stepped into the restaurant.

She wasn’t alone.

A tall woman walked beside her, dressed in a tailored black button-down with the sleeves rolled neatly to her elbows. Her locs were pulled back into a low ponytail, a simple gold band resting on her finger. One hand was tucked into her pocket while the other remained comfortably intertwined with Audrey’s.

For a second, the group just stared.

Sapphire blinked twice before leaning toward Lola.

“Oh… she wasn’t lying when she said she was married to a woman,” Sapphire whispered.

Lola’s eyes widened as she glanced back and forth between the couple.

“She’s gay gay,” Lola muttered under her breath.

“I mean…” Sapphire shrugged. “You thought Shane was imaginary.”

“I thought Shane was one of those mysterious spouses people make up so nobody asks questions,” Lola defended.

At the end of the table, another voice chimed in.

“Not imaginary. That’s a whole wife.”

The woman beside Audrey gave an awkward smile, clearly hearing every word.

“Y’all know we can hear you, right?” she asked.

Audrey burst out laughing.

“See? This is exactly why I didn’t bring Shane around before.”

“Girl, because for five years you had us thinking you were spending holidays alone,” Sapphire replied. “You never showed pictures. You barely talked about her.”

“I talked about her all the time!”

“You’d say things like, ‘My wife likes pasta,’ ‘My wife works late,’” Lola said. “‘That’s not talking. That’s witness protection.’”

The entire table erupted into laughter.

Audrey shook her head before squeezing Shane’s hand.

“Anyway,” she said, grinning from ear to ear, “hey y’all.”

The girls immediately waved.

“Hey!”

Shane offered a small wave of her own.

“Hi. It’s nice to finally meet everyone.”

Sapphire smiled sheepishly. “We’ve heard about you for years. We honestly didn’t know if you existed.”

“I exist,” Shane replied dryly. “Audrey just values privacy.”

“Privacy?” Lola looked at Audrey. “Baby, you announced your marriage like it was the weather forecast.”

Even Shane laughed at that.

Sapphire softened as she looked at Audrey.

“You know… I’m happy for you,” she admitted. “It’s nice seeing the person who makes you smile like this.”

Audrey glanced up at Shane, her expression becoming gentler.

“She drives me crazy,” Audrey said.

“And yet,” Shane replied, giving her hand a squeeze, “you still refuse to get rid of me.”

“That’s because I love you.”

The table grew quiet for a moment before Lola clutched her chest dramatically.

“Okay, enough. Y’all are making me sick.”

Everyone burst into laughter again.

For the first time, the mystery surrounding Audrey’s marriage had disappeared. The wife they had doubted for years sat right in front of them—real, reserved, and completely smitten with Audrey.

And judging by the way Audrey looked at Shane, there was never any doubt that she had found exactly where she belonged.

Lola glanced around the table, her smile fading slightly.

“Have y’all seen Tina?” she asked, scanning the restaurant entrance as if expecting her to walk through the doors at any moment.

Sapphire frowned and reached for her drink.

“No,” she said, shaking her head. “I haven’t.”

Audrey pulled out her phone almost immediately.

“She didn’t mention anything in the group chat,” Audrey replied, scrolling through the messages. “No ‘running late,’ no excuse, nothing.”

Beside her, Shane leaned over slightly.

“What happened?” she asked quietly.

Lola sighed.

“Tina’s been… different lately.”

“Different how?” Shane asked.

Sapphire exchanged a look with Lola before answering.

“Withdrawn,” Sapphire said. “She’ll disappear for days, then pop back up acting like everything’s fine.”

“And whenever we ask if she’s okay, she brushes us off,” Lola added. “‘I’m good.’ ‘Don’t worry about me.’ Same thing every time.”

Audrey’s eyes remained fixed on her phone.

“No new messages,” she murmured. “The last thing she sent was that laughing emoji under Sapphire’s meme yesterday.”

Shane’s expression grew more serious.

“Has anyone called her?”

The table went quiet.

Lola blinked.

“…Actually, no.”

“We all assumed somebody else had,” Sapphire admitted.

Audrey immediately pressed Tina’s contact and held the phone to her ear. The women watched her anxiously.

One ring.

Two rings.

Three.

Then the call went to voicemail.

Audrey lowered the phone.

“Straight to voicemail.”

Lola shifted uncomfortably in her seat.

“That’s not like Tina,” she said softly. “Even if she didn’t want to talk, she’d at least text one of us.”

Sapphire stared down at the table.

“You don’t think something happened, do you?”

Nobody answered right away.

Shane looked between the women, noticing the fear beginning to settle over the group.

“When was the last time anyone physically saw her?” she asked.

The question hung heavily in the air.

Lola’s eyes widened.

“…Church,” she whispered.

Sapphire slowly nodded.

“It was after Pastor Travis’ sermon.”

Audrey looked up from her phone, concern etched across her face.

“That was almost a week ago.”

The excitement that had filled the outing moments earlier disappeared completely.

Lola grabbed her purse and stood up.

“I don’t care if she gets annoyed with us,” she said firmly. “We’re going to check on Tina.”

Sapphire rose from her chair.

“I’m coming.”

Audrey slipped her phone into her bag while Shane stood beside her.

“Us too,” Audrey said.

Shane nodded once.

“If Tina’s okay, she’ll just have to forgive all of you for being overprotective.”

Lola headed toward the exit, her heart pounding.

“And if she’s not okay…”

No one finished the sentence.

They didn’t have to. The worry written across each woman’s face said enough.

... Read moreThis story really highlights the complex dynamics of close friendships and the importance of being open about one's identity. From personal experience, I know how hard it can be to balance privacy and sharing in relationships, especially when it involves something as big as a marriage. Audrey’s choice to keep Shane somewhat private for years shows a delicate balance between protecting one’s personal life and being honest with friends. The moment Shane steps into the restaurant symbolizes a breakthrough, not just for Audrey but for all their friends. It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes people shield parts of themselves out of fear or discomfort, but revealing those parts can lead to greater understanding and deeper connections. Moreover, the concern over Tina’s sudden withdrawal is something many people might relate to. In friend groups, it’s common to notice when someone changes but feel unsure how to approach them. The conversation about Tina’s silence and lack of communication resonates strongly because it’s a reminder to not take connections for granted and to proactively check in on loved ones when they seem distant. The blend of humor and affection among the characters creates a natural and relatable atmosphere, making the story feel authentic and warm. I particularly appreciated how the dialogue reflects everyday conversations, complete with teasing and care. It’s these moments that make friendships real and enduring. Overall, this piece is not only an engaging narrative but also encourages empathy and openness. For anyone who's ever felt hesitant about sharing their true self or concerned about a friend's wellbeing, this story offers both comfort and inspiration.
