A.Powell’s Married Sistas
Audrey smirked and glanced down at the charcoal gray suit she was wearing. The crisp white button-up underneath was neatly pressed, and her tie sat perfectly against her collar.
“What?” Audrey laughed. “Y’all acting like you’ve never seen me in a suit before.”
“Not like this,” Tina said, pointing her fork at her. “You look like somebody’s rich auntie that owns half the city.”
The table erupted with laughter.
“I’m serious,” Tina continued. “You came in here looking like you got a board meeting at two and a court case at four.”
Audrey shook her head. “I was trying something different.”
“It works,” Lola admitted. “I love it. The suit, the tie, the shoes. It’s giving confidence.”
“It’s giving she about to steal somebody’s girlfriend,” Sapphire added.
“Girl!” Audrey nearly choked on her drink.
The women laughed louder.
Sapphire rubbed her belly and winced.
The laughter immediately stopped.
“You okay?” Tina asked.
“Yeah,” Sapphire said, breathing slowly.
Lola narrowed her eyes.
“What?”
“That wasn’t a regular movement.”
Sapphire looked down at her stomach.
A few seconds later another sharp pain hit.
“Okay…” she muttered.
Audrey sat up straight.
“Okay what?”
Sapphire grabbed the edge of the table.
“I think that one might’ve been a contraction.”
The entire table froze.
“A contraction?” Tina repeated.
Sapphire nodded slowly.
“How far apart have they been?”
Sapphire’s eyes widened.
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?!” Audrey nearly yelled.
“Girl, because I wasn’t timing them!”
Another contraction hit, stronger this time.
Sapphire sucked her teeth and squeezed her eyes shut.
“Oh, hell no,” Lola said, already standing. “Everybody get up.”
“Wait,” Sapphire protested.
“No,” Audrey said, grabbing her purse. “We’ve been waiting nine months. The baby said she’s ready.”
Sapphire stood carefully.
Just as they began gathering their things, a warm sensation rushed down her legs.
Silence.
Sapphire looked down.
Tina looked down.
Lola looked down.
Audrey looked down.
“Oh my God,” Audrey whispered.
“My water broke,” Sapphire said.
The entire restaurant exploded into chaos.
“NOT AT THE TABLE!” Tina screamed.
“Girl, stop screaming!” Lola shouted.
Audrey was already helping Sapphire toward the door.
“Move! Everybody move! Baby coming through!”
Outside, Sapphire gripped Audrey’s arm as another contraction tore through her body.
Then she looked up at the women and said the last thing any of them expected.
“Don’t panic… but I think the baby’s coming faster than she’s supposed to.”
The color drained from Audrey’s face.
“What do you mean faster?”
Sapphire swallowed hard.
“I mean… I can feel her.”
The four friends stared at each other in complete horror.
“Audrey,” Lola said slowly.
“Yeah?”
“Drive.”
