Researchers find AI deception technique of Comet browser
Researchers found the AI trick of the Comet browser to delete Google Drive files.
Although artificial intelligence web browsers, or AI Web Browsers, are a buzz in technology with a lot of attention, each hack test always has a shocking effect.
According to a report by The Hacker News website, the AI Comet web browser hack test from Perplexity was conducted by a research team from Straiker STAR Labs, a security expert firm on AI. The method of hacking, which was discovered, could delete all files on the attacker's Google Drive, without requiring the victim to interact with any hacker-sent media (Zero Click), which the research team said was a simple method, but it was the use of the power of the AI Large Language Model (LLM or Large Language Model) that was so powerful that Overflowing beyond the user's request
This is done by sending an email with a Prompt command that instructs the AI assistant to manage Google Drive as in Organize and Clean (Regular Clenup) Google Drive as usual. But add the command to delete files with the extension genus of the file as defined and then review the changes made. This command will make the AI understand that it is a normal command without noticing that it is a malicious command. Then automate the organization and clean the drive until it leads to deletion of the files. In the end, the real user did not have to use the "jailbreak" method to make the AI follow the forbidden order.
This method works only with web browsers that have a connection to Gmail and Google Drive via OAuth authentication. The source does not indicate whether the research team has reported it to the developer or even what the developer like Perplexity thinks about the discovery. But it has been suggested by the research team that to prevent this, it is necessary to strengthen the security of not only the AI model, but also the AI Agent, Connector and Natural Language Instructions. That can also be used with the AI web browser so that such events do not occur again.
