Journaling with one pen

this is called the all-in-one journal/notebook (inspired by xiaohongshu influencers) and it’s meant to serve as a brain dump! The reason I started on one because I want to write down things aside from scheduled events as in my Muji B6 vertical planner.

format - however you like; a vertical timeline, weekly tracker, or no format. Just write down whatever comes up on your mind and something you want to get off your chest. Remember it’s not meant to be pretty!

Supplies:

📓 you’ll need a notebook, lined, dotted, plain, whatever you like! I’m using Muji B6 open-flat grid notebook ($7.90)

🖊️ you’ll only need ONE pen. I’m using Uni-ball umn-155 gel pen ($4)

〽️ you can also have one or 2 highlighters; I use them as a border for the timeline.

💡 you can also use mini page flags to go back and add things!

... Read moreOkay, let's dive a little deeper into why this 'one pen' journaling method and especially the Muji notebook has completely changed my routine! You might be wondering, what makes a Muji notebook so special? Well, for starters, the 'open-flat' design is a game-changer. No more fighting with a binding that tries to close on you while you're trying to write. The 'grid notebook' format also offers so much flexibility – perfect for my 'brain dump' days, but also structured enough for neat 'to-do lists' or even sketching. And the 'Muji high quality paper'? It’s just fantastic; ink doesn't bleed, which is a huge plus when I'm using my trusty Uni-ball pen. Beyond just brain dumping, I've found so many ways to make this 'all-in-one' journal work for me. For those looking for 'journaling notebook minimal' ideas, this is it. I often use it for a quick 'one line a day journal example' by just jotting down a key highlight or reflection before bed. It doesn't have to be a long entry! Sometimes, I dedicate a page to an 'expenses record' for the week, or I create a 'timeline' for upcoming projects. The beauty is that there’s no strict 'journal notebook design' you have to follow. I've seen some people struggle with making their journal 'pretty,' but this method is all about function over aesthetics. That said, as the OCR mentioned, I do sometimes add 'stamps' if I'm feeling a bit creative, or use my highlighters to create borders or mark important sections like 'meals/snacks' plans. For an 'overview of the coming week,' I might quickly sketch out a simple calendar layout. This helps me keep track of deadlines and appointments without needing a separate planner. The 'one pen' rule genuinely simplifies everything. It reduces decision fatigue and makes journaling feel less like a chore and more like a natural extension of my thoughts. If you're someone who gets overwhelmed by too many supplies or complicated layouts, I highly recommend trying this minimalist approach. It’s about creating a personal, functional space for your thoughts, tasks, and reflections. Whether it's for 'study hacks' or just general 'productivity,' having everything in one accessible spot is incredibly valuable. Give it a try, you might be surprised how much clarity it brings!

This is what I do most of the time especially at work. It's so hard to keep certain things in specific journals at some point they turn into an all in one journal.

Why journaling isn’t working (yet)
If journaling feels like it’s “not working,” it’s usually not because you’re bad at it. It’s because you’ve accidentally turned it into a performance. Trying to say the right thing. Trying to fix yourself. Trying to make every page meaningful. That pressure will shut you down every time.
