Uni Kuru Toga review
I have collected 3 Uni Kuru Togas even though I said I didn’t like the awkward grip–because I realize they feel great for sketching HAHAH~
My first one was the Ghibli edition, later I collected the glass colors edition (in yellow and cyan) and they were around $4 at the time. Currently have colored leads in both.
If you have never tried a Kuru Toga pencil, it has this mechanism that every time you press and lift it, the mechanism rotates your lead so you get a fresh side to write on, which all helps to keep your lead sharp so you don’t need to change your grip at all. I’ve always thought this is gimicky but I grew to like this pencil for sketching!
comparing the Kuru Toga with other mechanical pencil with the same 2B 0.5mm lead, you can see the Kuru Toga gives cleaner lines. Unless you have a habit of rotating your pencil already, if you keep writing using the same side with the pencil without the rotating mechanism, the lead will wear down to one side and your lines will look blunt! so the Kuru Toga is great for those who don’t have a habit of rotating pencils!

You might find basic models for around $5-$10, while special editions, like my Ghibli or Glass Colors versions (I currently have 3 Uni Kuru Toga mechanical pencils in my collection, including these!), can be a bit more. Given the unique mechanism and the quality of the writing/drawing experience, I personally feel it offers excellent value. It’s an investment that significantly improves the precision and enjoyment of using a mechanical pencil.
