Don’t cancel your old credit cards!

2025/1/14 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! I used to be one of those people who thought, 'Why keep an old credit card I barely use? I should just close it to simplify things.' Boy, was I wrong! It took a bit of learning, but I discovered that canceling your oldest credit accounts can actually do more harm than good to your credit score, and here's why from my perspective. One of the biggest factors in your credit score is your credit history length – often called 'credit age'. When you close your oldest card, you're essentially wiping out years, or even decades, of established credit history. Think about that '15 YEARS OF PAYMENT HISTORY' or '10 YEARS' of a card mentioned in the OCR. That's a huge chunk of positive history that shows lenders you're a responsible borrower over time. If your oldest card has been open for, say, 15 years, and your next oldest is only 5, closing that 15-year-old account drastically reduces your average credit age. Lenders like to see a long, positive track record, and a shorter credit history can make you look like a newer, less experienced borrower, even if you're not. Another crucial point, which many people overlook, is how closing an old card affects your credit utilization ratio. This ratio looks at how much credit you're using compared to your total available credit. Even if you don't 'USE ANYMORE' that old card, its credit limit contributes to your overall available credit. If you have a card with a $5,000 limit that you never use, it still helps keep your utilization low. Closing it means you lose that $5,000 in available credit. Suddenly, if you have other cards with balances, your utilization ratio might jump up, which can negatively impact your score. I've seen articles talk about the 'FIVE CREDIT FACTORS THAT SCORE', and utilization is definitely one of the big ones. So, what should you do if you have an old card, especially one with an 'ANNUAL FEE' that you're questioning? First, check if it truly has an annual fee. If it does, you might consider calling the issuer to see if they can waive it, convert the card to a no-annual-fee version, or offer you a product change. If it's a no-annual-fee card, simply keep it open! You don't have to use it frequently. I personally make a small, recurring purchase on my oldest card – like a streaming service subscription – and set it to autopay. This keeps the account active and maintains that valuable 'CREDIT HISTORY' without me having to actively manage it. This ensures I 'MAINTAIN AN CREDIT SCORE' and keep that positive payment history flowing. It's about being strategic. That 'OLD WELLS FARGO CAR' (card) with a small limit might seem insignificant, but its age is gold! It’s 'CONTRIBUTING TO THE MOST AMOUNT' of your credit age. So, next time you're thinking of decluttering your wallet by canceling an unused card, especially 'YOUR OLDEST CARDS', remember these points. Protecting your credit age and utilization is a simple yet powerful way to 'MAINTAIN AN CREDIT SCORE' and build a strong financial foundation. Don't be 'EMBARRASSED BY' an old card; embrace it as a key part of your credit health!
