Hold ON!!!
Stubborn snail went for a ride while cleaning the glass ! #snail #aquarium #saltwater #fishtank #lemon8diarychallenge
When I first started my saltwater aquarium, I was constantly battling algae. It felt like a never-ending chore, always scrubbing the glass! I kept hearing about 'cleaning with snails!' and honestly, I was skeptical. Could these little creatures really make a difference? I decided to give it a try and introduced a couple of mystery snails into my tank. And let me tell you, my stubborn snail quickly became one of my favorite tank inhabitants! One of the biggest questions I had, and I see a lot of you asking, is: 'Are mystery snails good cleaners?' Based on my personal experience, the answer is a resounding YES, with a few caveats. These little guys are absolute champions at munching on soft algae that accumulates on the glass, decorations, and even plant leaves. I've watched them glide across the front of my tank, leaving a clean trail behind them – it's fascinating and so satisfying! They also do a great job of consuming leftover food and detritus that settles on the substrate, which helps keep the water quality stable. However, it’s important to remember they aren't a full-service cleaning crew. They won't clean stubborn black beard algae or get into every tiny crevice, and they certainly won't replace regular water changes or filter maintenance. But for daily upkeep and that sparkling glass look, they are fantastic. Taking care of aquarium snails, especially mystery snails, is surprisingly easy, which is a huge plus for any busy aquarist. They are pretty hardy and adaptable to a range of water parameters, though consistent water quality is always best. I make sure my tank's pH and hardness are suitable, and I provide them with calcium supplements (like a cuttlebone or calcium-rich foods) to ensure their shells stay strong and healthy. Most of the time, they'll find enough to eat from algae and leftover fish food, but if your tank is super clean, you might need to supplement their diet with algae wafers or blanched vegetables. I've found mine love a good piece of zucchini! Another common query I see is 'how big do mystery snails get in aquarium' and 'how many mystery snails in a 55-gallon tank'. Mystery snails can grow to a pretty decent size, often reaching about 2 inches in diameter, sometimes a bit more. They can get quite noticeable! For a 55-gallon tank, which is a good size, you could comfortably house several mystery snails without overcrowding or overwhelming your bioload. I'd typically recommend starting with 3-5 snails for a tank that size, and then observe how much algae they consume and if your water parameters remain stable. You can always add more later if needed, but it's better to start small. They do produce waste, just like any other tank inhabitant, so don't overstock! In my opinion, incorporating mystery snails into your aquarium is a brilliant move for anyone looking for natural tank helpers. They add an interesting dynamic to the tank, are fun to watch, and genuinely contribute to a cleaner environment. Just be prepared for them to sometimes "go for a ride" on your magnet cleaner, as mine often does!
