winter & low vitamin d ☀️ how i fixed mine
Every winter, I used to feel off—low energy, mood all over the place, constant cravings for sunshine (and maybe too much coffee). Turns out, I was seriously lacking vitamin D.
If winter makes you feel sluggish and blah, vitamin D might be part of the puzzle. A mix of food, supplements, outdoor time, and light therapy helped me feel so much better—maybe it’ll help you too.
If you feel the same, here’s what actually helped me boost my levels.
☀️ Prioritize Vitamin D-Rich Foods
I used to think food alone could fix my deficiency. While it helps, you need to be intentional. Fatty fish like salmon, egg yolks, and fortified foods (hello, oat milk) are solid sources. Bonus: pairing them with healthy fats helps absorption.
☀️ Consider a Supplement
After my doctor basically told me my levels were *nonexistent*, I started supplementing. D3 is the most effective form, and taking it with food (especially something with fat) helps absorption. If you’re not sure about your levels, a blood test is worth it.
☀️ Get Outside (Even When It’s Cloudy)
Winter sun exposure isn’t ideal, but even 10-30 minutes outside can help. I started making short walks a non-negotiable, even when it’s freezing. Bonus points if you can get some light on your face in the morning—it helps regulate circadian rhythms too.
☀️ A Light Therapy Lamp Can Help
This was a game changer. While it doesn’t boost vitamin D directly, it *does* help with seasonal mood dips. I use mine in the mornings while drinking coffee, and it genuinely makes me feel more awake.
