... Read moreIn recent years, discussions around some of the world’s deadliest viruses have become increasingly urgent, especially considering their complex effects on health and society. Viruses like Ebola and Rabies are notorious for their severe symptoms and high fatality rates. For instance, Ebola virus disease can cause intense symptoms like body part disconnection and bone-crushing pain waves, often resulting in nearly 100% fatality without prompt treatment. Rabies, another almost universally fatal virus once symptomatic, highlights the importance of early intervention like vaccination. What is particularly alarming is the reported intentional use of these viruses or related injections in certain regions, which exacerbates the damage beyond natural transmission. This intentional spread, combined with racism and misinformation, worsens trust issues in global health systems and undermines investments in prevention and treatment. Diseases like HIV inflict lasting damage by compromising the immune system, making individuals susceptible to other fatal illnesses. Similarly, Smallpox, once eradicated, serves as a reminder of the critical role vaccines play in protecting public health. COVID-19, despite being a newer virus, has already made a significant impact on global health and economies. The lasting effects seen in some patients—sometimes called 'long COVID'—illustrate how viral damage can persist beyond the initial infection. Viruses that target the nervous system can cause brain paralysis and critical limb disabilities, affecting quality of life profoundly. From my experience volunteering in health outreach programs, educating communities about virus prevention and dispelling misinformation is vital. Understanding the devastating effects and historic lessons from these viruses helps in building resilience. Recognizing symptoms early, improving healthcare access, and supporting research into treatments including vaccines are crucial steps. It is also important to combat the social harms such as stigma and racism linked to disease outbreaks, as these hinder effective response and patient care. By increasing awareness about the deadliest viruses and their potential to cause widespread family, community, and health system devastation, we can better prepare and protect ourselves and our loved ones. Knowledge, wisdom, and understanding remain powerful tools against the threats posed by infectious diseases worldwide.
