U.S. Cases Linked to Cruise Return—Here’s What to Do!

Though recent Andes virus cases tied to a cruise have raised alarms, this isn’t COVID.

But, staying safe is key!

Ventilate spaces, wear gloves, use a bleach mix, and disinfect properly.

We’ve learned from pandemics—knowledge is power!

... Read moreHey everyone! I know when we hear about new viruses, especially after what we've all been through, it's easy to jump to conclusions like 'is this another COVID-like event?' My recent dive into the Andes virus and Hantavirus made me realize how crucial it is to know the difference and understand what we're actually dealing with. Good news first: these are not COVID-19! But they can still cause severe illness, so staying informed is our best defense. Let's break down the two main concerns here: Hantavirus and the Andes virus. While both are serious, their transmission methods are quite distinct. Hantavirus: This one is typically spread to humans through contact with infected rodents or their waste. Think mice and rats! You can get Hantavirus if you breathe in air contaminated with rodent waste (urine, droppings, saliva) that has been stirred up. This often happens when cleaning out sheds, cabins, or other areas that have been closed for a while and might have rodent infestations. The infographic I saw really highlighted this – it's all about avoiding those tiny particles. Symptoms can start subtly, like fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, but can quickly progress to severe respiratory problems known as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) or Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) depending on the strain. Andes Virus: Now, this is where it gets a little different and why it might cause more concern, although it's still rare in the US. The Andes virus is a specific type of Hantavirus, mainly found in South America, but what makes it unique is its ability to spread from person to person. Yes, you read that right – close contact with an infected person's bodily fluids, especially through respiratory droplets, can transmit it. This is why it often gets compared to respiratory viruses we’re more familiar with, even though it's fundamentally different from COVID-19. It’s important to remember this person-to-person transmission is usually with very close, sustained contact, not casual encounters. Symptoms are similar to other Hantaviruses, often leading to severe respiratory issues. So, how do we protect ourselves and practice good hantavirus prevention? Rodent Control is Key: If you're dealing with mice or rats, seal up holes and cracks in your home, keep food in sealed containers, and clean up spills immediately. Traps can help manage existing populations. Safe Cleaning: When cleaning areas where rodents might have been, ventilate the space thoroughly first. Wear gloves and a mask. Instead of sweeping or vacuuming (which stirs up airborne particles), wet down contaminated areas with a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) or another disinfectant before wiping it up. Then, double-bag and dispose of the waste properly. Personal Hygiene: Always wash your hands thoroughly after being in areas where rodents might be present or after handling anything that could be contaminated. Awareness for Andes Virus: If traveling to regions where Andes virus is endemic, be aware of symptoms and avoid close contact with anyone showing signs of illness. While rare, it's always good to be mindful. The original post emphasized that "knowledge is power," and I couldn't agree more. Understanding these viruses – their specific transmission methods, their potential for severe illness, and crucially, that they are not COVID-19 – empowers us to take targeted, effective precautions. Let's stay informed and stay safe by focusing on these practical steps. It's about being prepared, not panicked!

19 & Pregnant during COVID ✨
This is in NO way glamorizing teen pregnancy. If anything the complete opposite. I love my girl, and I’ve even had another baby since then. But this was HARD. It still is HARD. In my mind I was so grown, and now I look back and know I was still such a baby. I had no choice but to grow up fast. Th
