Raised Beds vs. In-Ground

Raised bed or in-ground?

Both can work.

Raised beds are great if your soil is poor, drainage is bad, or you want more control. 🌱

In-ground gardens are great if you have decent soil, more space, and want a lower-cost setup.🌱

The best garden is the one you can maintain consistently. 💪🏾👩🏾‍🌾

Period.

... Read moreChoosing between raised beds and in-ground gardens largely depends on your specific gardening conditions and goals. Raised beds offer superior soil control, which is especially beneficial if your native soil is poor or compacted. Because raised beds improve drainage and warm up faster in spring, they can extend your growing season, particularly in cooler climates. On the downside, they usually require a higher upfront investment both in materials and soil amendments, and because they are elevated, the soil may dry out faster requiring closer watering attention. On the other hand, in-ground gardens often suit gardeners who have access to fertile soil and ample space. They usually cost less to set up, and when properly maintained, they support a thriving soil ecosystem naturally. In-ground gardens can allow plants to develop stronger root systems and may need less frequent watering than raised beds due to deeper soil volume. However, gardeners must contend with local soil quality, possible drainage issues, and weeds. From my experience, the best garden setup is one you can maintain consistently. I recommend starting with a small raised bed if soil quality or space is a concern — it offers greater flexibility and less strain on your back during maintenance. Ensure you mulch well to retain moisture and reduce watering frequency. For those with good soil and more outdoor space, going in-ground can be rewarding and budget-friendly. Additionally, mixing both types in your garden can give you the benefits of each: raised beds for delicate plants or vegetables needing exact soil conditions, and in-ground plots for hardier, space-demanding crops. Whatever you choose, focusing on regular care, watering, soil amendments, and pest management ensures a flourishing garden. Remember, the perfect garden is the one you enjoy tending every day.

The easiest raised garden beds
The easiest (and cheapest) large garden beds I’ve made. For one garden bed you will need: -2 10x2x12 boards - 8 concrete retaining wall blocks That’s it. I cut the boards into 8 foot pieces which left me with 2 4 foot pieces for the width. Lined them up In the concrete blocks and voila.

An infographic titled 'WRONG DEPTH, WASTED ROOTS' illustrates optimal raised bed depths for various crops. It shows 6-inch beds for lettuce, radishes, herbs; 12-inch for peppers, bush beans, cucumbers; 18-inch for tomatoes, carrots, potatoes; and 24-inch for asparagus, sweet potatoes, and artichokes, emphasizing matching depth to root needs.
Pick the right height for a raised bed.
Every raised bed the same height means some crops get too little soil and others get more than they'll ever use. Each crop's root system needs a specific depth. Too shallow and roots hit bottom, fork, and starve the plant. Too deep and you're paying for soil that nothing reaches.
