mom was right about the interweb i fear🫠

2/27 Edited to

... Read moreGrowing up, I often heard my mom caution me about the dangers of the internet, but like many, I brushed it off as typical parental concern. However, as I’ve spent more time online and witnessed various unsettling trends, her words have taken on a new meaning. The internet is a vast and sometimes unpredictable space, filled with both incredible opportunities and potential risks. From my own experiences, one thing that stands out is how easy it is to encounter misinformation or harmful content without even trying. Social media platforms, forums, and websites can sometimes amplify negativity, creating anxiety or fear. I’ve noticed that being aware of this and practicing digital mindfulness—like verifying sources before trusting information and setting time limits on online use—helps maintain a healthier relationship with technology. Another point my mom hinted at was the lack of privacy online. Indeed, sharing personal information can sometimes lead to unexpected consequences, from targeted ads to security concerns. It’s important to understand privacy settings, be cautious about what we share, and use strong, unique passwords. Despite these challenges, the internet is also a powerful tool for learning, connection, and creative expression. I’ve found that by approaching it with respect and awareness—balancing curiosity and caution—this digital world can be navigated safely. In hindsight, my mom’s advice was less about restricting my freedom and more about preparing me to engage wisely and protect myself. If you feel overwhelmed by online information or digital life stresses, remember you’re not alone. It’s okay to take breaks, seek out trustworthy sources, and talk about your experiences. Embracing the internet mindfully has helped me feel more empowered and less fearful in this ever-connected world.
