Lymphatic Filariasis, a major public health challenge in tropical regions like India and Southeast Asia, is primarily caused by thread-like nematodes, most notably Wuchereria bancrofti. These parasites are transmitted to humans (the definitive host) via mosquito vectors such as Culex and Anopheles. The life cycle begins when an infected mosquito deposits L3 larvae into the skin. These larvae migrate to the lymphatic system, maturing into adult worms that can live for years, causing dilation and chronic lymph stasis.
The disease progresses from an asymptomatic stage with "silent" lymphatic damage to acute inflammatory episodes (adenolymphangitis) characterized by fever and painful swelling. Chronic infection leads to permanent disfigurements, including lymphedema, elephantiasis (extreme limb thickening), and hydrocele. Beyond the physical disability and secondary bacterial infections, patients often face severe social stigma.
