💫 As an AuDHDer, I’ve always really craved and thrived on routines while simultaneously struggling to stick to them. Lately, I’ve been really into the idea of “experience menus” for my morning and night time routines. The way it works is that instead of feeling pressure to complete every single step of the routine, you choose the steps you have the time and energy to do at the moment. It can change day to day but you’ve got a nice clear list of options!

Instead of rigid to-do lists that often lead to burnout or frustration, this approach lets you pick and choose what feels right for your body and mind on any given day. It truly transforms the pressure of a routine into an empowering choice. Let's dive a little deeper into how my morning and evening menus work. For my morning menu, I've listed a variety of options that cater to different energy levels. For instance, some days waking up with an alarm feels impossible, so I might opt for a more gentle wake-up, letting my body guide me. On others, I can tackle a full skincare routine, making it a mindful moment of self-care. Incorporating "journal/planner time" is a fantastic way to set intentions for the day without feeling overwhelmed. It's about checking in with myself and deciding if today is a day for a quick stretch or a more involved breakfast routine. Having these options laid out, like on a menu, makes it so much easier to choose what nourishes me without guilt. Similarly, my evening menu is designed for winding down flexibly. "Turn down lights" is a simple yet powerful step to signal to my brain that it's time to relax. Putting on pajamas becomes a cozy ritual, and my skincare routine again offers a moment of calm. If I'm feeling up to it, "read a book" is a wonderful screen-free option, but if my energy is low, I might just focus on the essentials. For anyone interested in health, integrating an evening supplements routine can easily be added as a menu choice – perhaps taking your vitamins while you wind down with a cup of herbal tea. The beauty is that you have the freedom to select what serves you best from your own curated list, ensuring consistency even when life gets unpredictable. Creating your own routine menu is simpler than you think. Start by listing all the things you wish you could do in your morning and evening. Then, categorize them by how much energy they require. This helps you identify your go-to low-energy options and your ideal high-energy activities. Remember, the goal isn't perfection, but sustainable and compassionate self-care. This flexible approach has truly helped me embrace routines in a way I never thought possible, allowing me to thrive while respecting my AuDHD brain.
