L&D tips
So I started in L&D in late August. And I love it so far. Here’s some tips to help you if you are seeking a career in OB or are just starting.
Be prepared. You’re gonna have good days and bad days. The bad days may look like delivering a “perfect looking” infant who has passed to laboring a mom who made it to fully tilted who then ends up with an emergency c section.
Having an open mind will get you so far! I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard nurses be unsupportive of their laboring mom’s choices. Specifically the choice to not get an epidural. These moms are vulnerable and need every bit of support we can offer.
Your coworkers are going to be the best help you can get! Don’t be afraid to call for help if you need it. There’s so many times I’ll have another nurse follow behind me (since I’m still on orientation) to double check my work or cervical exams. I also am not afraid to ask for help to turn my patients.
Learn as much as you can! I started learning how to interpret fetal strips before I was hired. I also spend some of my free time learning different laboring positions and how to support my patients better! I am also looking at taking more classes in my spare time to help learn as much as I can about labor and delivery and the pathophysiology of labor.
And finally don’t be afraid to learn from your mistakes. Learning from them makes us stronger in the long run.
An added bonus is to join AWHONN’ they have tons of free classes. You can take once you become a member! Prices start at five dollars a month! I do their $20 a month membership though!

Did you got to school for this?
