3 TIPS FOR A PERFECT PULL-UP

As a coach, a lot of my clients have had a common goal of getting their first pull up.

Pull-ups are by far one of the most difficult movements for many people, so do not feel discouraged if they are hard for you to do! A lot of the ability to do a pull-up comes from genetic factors, and properly engaging the right muscles.

Here are three tips that I used to coach my clients that will help you engage the right muscles while doing your pull-ups:

1. Open chest:

In other words; engage lats, but the cue “open chest” is much easier to digest for those who struggle with engaging their lats. By opening the chest (retracting the shoulder blades) and pulling the shoulders down and away from the ears (depression) we are stabilizing the shoulder joint and engaging those lats!

2. Tight core

Engaging the core prevents any excess movement in the spine! The more stable the better.

3. Engaged glutes

Your glutes play a huge role in hip stabilization! If we can engage them it will prevent our hips from moving through flexion and extension.

... Read morePull-ups are a quintessential exercise for developing upper body strength, but many struggle to achieve them due to various factors including muscle engagement, technique, and genetic predisposition. Understanding the mechanics behind pull-ups can significantly enhance your performance. To start, focusing on the right muscle groups is critical. Engaging the lats effectively improves your pulling strength. Remember to keep your chest open while stabilizing your shoulder blades; this promotes better control. Additionally, a tight core is essential to minimize unnecessary movement. Not only does this prevent strain, but it also allows you to maintain a straight line from your head to your heels during the movement. Finally, don't underestimate the role of your glutes. Fully engaging your glutes not only aids in hip stabilization but also contributes to your overall posture during the exercise. This comprehensive body engagement will help you execute pull-ups more efficiently, paving the way for mastering this challenging yet rewarding exercise. Incorporating these tips into your routine will make the journey towards your first pull-up not only achievable but also enjoyable. Celebrate your progress, and remember that persistence is key!
