Borzoi Batch

Hey everyone! I've been absolutely hooked on drawing Borzoi dogs lately, and seeing my latest 'Borzoi Batch' sketches get some love has made me want to share a bit more about my process. These elegant hounds are just so captivating, with their unique profiles and graceful movements. If you're a digital artist like me, especially on Procreate, and want to try drawing a Borzoi, here are some tips I've picked up. First off, understanding their anatomy is key. Don't be intimidated by their long snouts! It's what makes them so distinctive. Start with basic shapes to get the overall structure right – think ovals for the head and chest, and flowing lines for the neck and body. Their long, slender legs are also a hallmark, so pay attention to how they articulate, whether they're gracefully standing or caught mid-jump. I often find myself sketching multiple Borzoi dogs in various poses, from a relaxed basking position to an energetic leap, to really get a feel for their range of motion. When it comes to capturing their signature poses, observation is your best friend. In my recent batch, I aimed to show them yawning, walking, jumping, standing, and even just basking lazily. Each pose tells a story and requires a different emphasis. For a yawning Borzoi, exaggerate the open mouth and the stretch of the neck. For a jumping one, focus on the dynamic lines and the flow of their fur. Don't be afraid to embrace a loose, expressive style at first; it helps capture the energy without getting bogged down in perfect details too early. You can always refine later. For us digital artists, especially on Procreate, there are so many tools to help. I love experimenting with different textured brushes for their silky fur. A soft airbrush can create a lovely base, and then a finer, slightly rougher brush can add those individual strands, especially around their ears and tails. Layering is crucial here – start with lighter values and gradually build up your shadows and highlights to give depth. Remember, Borzoi often have beautiful, expressive eyes, so a small detailed brush can bring those to life. Adding personality is what truly makes a drawing shine. Think about the subtle curves of their back, the way their ears might droop or perk up, or the gentle slope of their forehead. Even a simple sketch can convey so much if you pay attention to these small nuances. I always try to imagine the dog's character as I draw. Are they regal and calm, or playful and mischievous?
