My #1 read of 2024!

What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher was my number one read in 2024. While it was a short read it definitely didn't disappoint.

... Read moreI absolutely have to gush a bit more about T. Kingfisher's 'What Moves the Dead' because it truly earned its spot as my #1 read of the year! If you're into gothic horror with a unique, unsettling twist, you need to pick this up. This book is a brilliant re-imagining of a classic tale, drenched in an atmosphere that will creep under your skin and stay there long after you've turned the last page. From the moment I saw the cover – that eerie rabbit-like creature with its disturbing fungal growths – I knew I was in for something special. It perfectly encapsulates the bizarre and beautiful horror contained within. The story follows Alex Easton, a retired soldier, as they journey to a decaying ancestral home in the Galician countryside to visit a childhood friend, Madeline Usher. What unfolds is a masterclass in atmospheric dread, a slow-burn mystery that quickly spirals into genuine horror. The house itself feels like a character, breathing and rotting, with every creak and shadow adding to the palpable sense of unease. Kingfisher's writing style is just superb. It's witty and engaging, even as it describes truly grotesque and disturbing phenomena. You'll find yourself laughing at Alex's dry observations one moment and then immediately feeling a chill run down your spine the next as the bizarre nature of the Usher family's affliction becomes apparent. The fungal growths aren’t just a visual detail on the cover; they become a central, horrifying element of the mystery, blurring the lines between nature, disease, and something far more sinister and supernatural. The way the author slowly reveals the secrets of the house and its inhabitants is masterful, building a quiet tension that explodes into unforgettable, visceral horror. This isn't a jump-scare kind of book; it's a slow, creeping dread that relies on disturbing imagery, psychological unease, and a pervasive sense of decay. The short length actually works in its favor, making it a perfectly condensed dose of terror that leaves a lasting impression without overstaying its welcome. It's a modern gothic tale that pays homage to its roots while forging its own path of unique, biological horror. If you've been searching for a book that offers both intellectual engagement and genuine scares, especially one that blends classic gothic tropes with modern sensibilities, 'What Moves the Dead' is an absolute must-read. It’s a book that truly moves you, in the most unsettling and unforgettable way possible, and I constantly find myself thinking about its eerie ending. I can't recommend it enough if you're looking for a chilling, atmospheric read that will stick with you.
