LAST ORIENTATION DAY🦅

Reflecting on what was truly my last orientation day, I'm amazed at how much I've grown, not just as a student, but as a budding leader. Campus Rec's team-building sessions are always a unique challenge. You have a room full of fresh faces – some super eager, others clearly wishing they were anywhere else! My main goal was always to create an empowering environment where everyone, especially the quieter ones, felt comfortable enough to step out of their shell. One of the biggest hurdles was getting students to communicate openly. It's easy for a group to fall silent, especially when they don't know each other. I learned quickly that the key isn't just throwing out an activity, but actively demonstrating and participating alongside them. For instance, during one icebreaker, I realized a few students were holding back. Instead of pushing them, I shared a slightly embarrassing (but relatable!) story about my own first orientation. Suddenly, the tension eased, and others started to open up. It taught me that vulnerability from a leader can be incredibly powerful in fostering connection. Developing these leadership skills has been invaluable. It’s not just about guiding a group; it’s about reading the room, adapting on the fly, and finding creative ways to motivate. These are precisely the skills I'll need as a middle school educator. Imagine a classroom where every student feels heard and is willing to collaborate – that's the dream! This experience at orientation felt like a mini-classroom, giving me a fantastic testing ground for my future career. For any new students reading this, my biggest piece of advice is: lean into the discomfort! Orientation can feel overwhelming, but it’s a crucial first step. Participate in those team-building games, introduce yourself to someone new, and ask questions. Those initial interactions can set the tone for your entire college experience. Don't be afraid to make the shift from observer to active participant – it’s how you’ll truly survive and thrive. And for fellow student leaders or anyone looking to develop their own leadership chops, remember that patience and empathy are your best tools. Not every activity will be a hit, and not every student will immediately engage. But by creating a supportive, fun atmosphere and genuinely caring about their experience, you can empower them to connect, learn, and make the most of their new journey. This last orientation day truly solidified my passion for guiding and supporting others, and I’m so excited to carry these lessons forward.
