Friday night seed starting and I have zero regrets

This week GrowSmart told me it was time to start peppers, artichokes, herbs, and onions indoors. So that’s exactly what I did. Trays filled, lights on, humidity dome on, and the season officially feels real.

I built GrowSmart because as a full-time worker, mom, wife, and foster mom I needed my garden to be organized without spending hours researching planting windows. The app uses your city’s frost date to tell you exactly what to start and when. No guesswork, no spreadsheets, no Googling.

Peppers and artichokes need the longest lead time before transplant in Zone 5, so starting them now is not optional if you want a full harvest. That’s the kind of detail most generic planting calendars miss.

... Read moreStarting seeds indoors can feel overwhelming, especially when balancing a busy lifestyle like mine. What I’ve found most helpful is understanding the specifics—like why peppers and artichokes need to be started 10 weeks before transplanting in Zone 5. This lead time ensures strong seedlings ready to thrive outdoors. Using a garden planning tool that factors in your local frost dates is a game-changer. It saves me time and guesswork, allowing me to focus on actual gardening instead of researching. For example, artichokes require vernalization—a cold treatment period—to stimulate healthy head formation. Knowing when and how to provide this can double my chances of success. Humidity domes and grow lights are simple tools that create optimal germination conditions indoors. For peppers, sowing seeds about 6mm deep at a temperature of 20°C and keeping them moist but not waterlogged helps ensure good germination rates within 10-21 days. Starting herbs like rosemary and lavender indoors also requires patience due to slow germination times and sometimes cold stratification. I’ve learned to sow these at shallow depths (around 3mm), keep them under sufficient light, and maintain steady warmth. One tip that’s helped me immensely is maintaining a detailed care log for watering, feeding, and pruning, customized to each plant’s needs. This approach improves seedling survival rates and prepares plants for transplantation into raised beds or outdoor gardens. Ultimately, investing an evening to start seeds indoors not only marks the official start of the gardening season but also sets a successful course for your garden’s growth. If you’re juggling multiple roles but want to grow your own food and plants, tools like GrowSmart provide an efficient, user-friendly way to organize your tasks and timelines—no spreadsheets or Google searches required!
