How did I stop doing this?

I used to think healing would feel dramatic.

Instead, it looked like remembering.

Remembering what music I loved.

What books I couldn’t put down.

What restaurants I wanted to try.

What friendships made me feel safe.

The things that made me happy weren’t gone.

I had just stopped making space for them.

If you’re healing, here’s your reminder:

You don’t have to earn joy.

You don’t have to justify it.

You don’t have to wait until you’re “fully healed.”

Start small.

Order the coffee.

Call the friend.

Buy the wine.

Watch the show.

Listen to the song.

You deserve to know yourself outside of survival.

Save this for the days you need the reminder.

... Read moreHealing is often viewed as a monumental change, but through my personal experience, I discovered it’s much more subtle and intimate than I imagined. It wasn't about a dramatic reset but rather a gentle reawakening. One pivotal moment for me was realizing how much unhappiness had crept into my life simply because I stopped doing the things that truly brought me joy. For example, I began buying the wine I enjoyed rather than what others preferred, a small but meaningful reclaiming of choice that reminded me of my own tastes and intuition. Another turning point was booking a trip just for myself, even if those around me didn’t understand why it felt urgent. This trip became symbolic of prioritizing my own needs and desires. I also found solace in listening to songs I once loved but had put aside, playing them loudly as a way to drown out self-doubt and reclaim my happiness unfiltered. I spent time binge-watching shows that someone else had once dismissed and reading in bed all day, allowing myself permission to enjoy life on my own terms without guilt. Reconnecting with my best friend provided much-needed emotional safety, underscoring the importance of surrounding myself with supportive relationships that nourish rather than drain. I realized that these actions didn’t instantly heal everything, but they served as powerful reminders that I existed independently of others’ expectations. Doing what makes you happy isn’t selfish; it’s an essential path to finding yourself again. Healing means giving yourself permission to ask, "What makes me happy?" and acting on that without guilt or delay. If you find yourself struggling to heal, remember this: small steps like ordering your favorite coffee, calling a trusted friend, or watching a cherished show can significantly impact your emotional well-being. Healing doesn’t require waiting until you feel "fully healed" to experience joy. Instead, joy can be a part of your journey, helping you step out from survival mode and embrace life fully. Remember, healing is as much about rediscovering who you are as it is about moving past what hurt you. Keep these reminders close on the days when choosing happiness feels hard—because you deserve to live, laugh, and find peace in your life again.
