Feminism and Raising a Son
I grew up watching women give everything to patriarchy and call it love—carrying emotional labor, silence, and sacrifice as if it were their duty. That experience is exactly why I’m intentional about how I plan to raise my son, who will be born in February. I’m a feminist raising a son not to erase masculinity, but to reject the version of it that requires women to shrink. He has a father who will teach him strength, responsibility, and how to move through the world as a man with integrity. And I will teach him care, emotional awareness, and respect—because softness doesn’t weaken men, it makes them whole. My son will grow up knowing that women are not here to serve him, save him, or suffer for him. I’m not raising him to dominate—I’m raising him to be balanced, emotionally present, and capable of healthy love. ❤️ What’s one cycle you’re intentional about breaking?
Motherhood plays a critical role in shaping the values we pass on to the next generation, especially when it comes to dismantling harmful patriarchal norms. Feminism in parenting, particularly when raising sons, involves teaching boys that masculinity doesn't have to be synonymous with dominance or emotional suppression. Instead, encouraging emotional awareness and respect empowers young boys to become well-rounded men. Emotional labor, often carried by women, is something feminist parents aim to redefine within family dynamics. Teaching sons to recognize and share emotional responsibilities helps break traditional cycles where women are expected to silently endure sacrifices. By imparting lessons about care and integrity, parents prepare their sons to engage in relationships that promote equality and mutual respect. It's also important for sons to witness positive examples of masculinity exemplified by their fathers or male role models who embody strength without aggression, responsibility without control, and softness without weakness. This holistic model emphasizes that being emotionally present is a strength, not a flaw. By intentionally rejecting outdated ideas that women exist to serve or suffer for men, feminist parenting fosters a new kind of balance. Sons raised with these values grow to appreciate partnership, respect boundaries, and communicate openly. This approach not only benefits individual families but also contributes to broader cultural change by breaking cycles of patriarchal domination and emotional repression. Parenting with intention about cycle breaking, emotional health, and respectful masculinity is essential in raising men capable of healthy love and authentic connection. Such sons become advocates for gender equality, emotional intelligence, and compassionate leadership in their communities.
