Caregiving does not always have a title.

I wrote this piece for Health Union reflecting on my experience with my father and how I have come to better understand the role I was in, even when I did not have a name for it.

Caregiving is often something we grow into without realizing it. It can look like showing up to appointments, helping manage the day to day, but also simply being present in ways that are not always visible.

Over time, I have come to understand that many adult children find themselves in this space. Not always calling it caregiving, but carrying more than they may have ever expected.

I am sharing this in the hope that someone else reads it and feels a little less alone.

3/26 Edited to

... Read moreCaregiving is a role that many people find themselves in unexpectedly, especially adult children caring for aging or ill parents. From my experience, caregiving isn’t just about attending medical appointments or managing medications—it often involves quiet moments of simply being there, offering emotional support, and managing daily life challenges that may go unnoticed by others. When you don’t have a clear title for what you’re doing, it can feel isolating and overwhelming. I’ve learned that many adult children never explicitly identify themselves as caregivers even though they take on substantial duties that impact their emotional and physical well-being. This invisibility can make it harder to seek help or even acknowledge the emotional toll caregiving takes. One helpful approach has been joining support groups or communities where others share similar experiences. Knowing you're not alone can alleviate feelings of isolation and provide practical advice on navigating healthcare systems, balancing personal needs, and managing stress. Additionally, caregiving often evolves gradually—it starts with small acts of kindness and becomes an integral part of daily life. Recognizing these moments and validating your role is essential. It’s okay not to have a "caregiver" title to do the work; the impact of your support is profound. For those who find themselves stepping into caregiving without preparation, it's crucial to set boundaries and engage in self-care. Taking breaks, seeking professional resources, or asking others for help can sustain your ability to provide care effectively over time. Ultimately, caregiving is about connection—being present both physically and emotionally. While it can be challenging, it can also foster deep bonds and meaning. Sharing these stories can encourage others to embrace the role, however unnamed, and to seek support when needed.
