retrieval training

This was at the end of the session it was a maybe 5-10 minute session, we had Taz show her how to retrieve a wallet at first (she didn't wanna pick it up but would run over to it) then we switched to keys with a crocheted charm on it (which she loved to pick up) she did do some really good bring to me we are just working on her bring them and dropping them at the feet and not the hands as of right now and when she got distracted we had Taz retrieve them and bring them back to us

... Read moreRetrieval training is an invaluable exercise to engage your dog mentally and physically, reinforcing obedience and practical skills. Starting with familiar objects like wallets and keys helps dogs learn clear expectations. In my experience, patience and consistency are crucial. Initially, some dogs may hesitate to pick up certain items, just like the example where the dog ran over the wallet but didn’t pick it up. Offering a more appealing object, such as keys with a crocheted charm, often encourages them to engage more willingly. A key part of training is shaping the behavior step-by-step. For example, teaching a dog to bring an item directly to your feet rather than your hands takes focused repetitions and rewards. Using positive reinforcement, like treats or praise, immediately after correct actions motivates dogs to repeat the behavior. It’s also helpful to have a demonstration dog or trainer perform the task to visually model the desired behavior, which was done by Taz in this session to maintain focus. Dealing with distractions is another important challenge in retrieval training. Dogs can get sidetracked, so gradually introducing distractions while keeping training sessions short—around 5 to 10 minutes—helps maintain engagement without overwhelming them. If the dog gets distracted, having a trained dog retrieve the item shows the trainee what is expected. From my personal observations, maintaining a relaxed and patient attitude during training helps dogs feel confident to try new behaviors. Retrieval skills not only enhance your dog’s obedience but also prepare working dogs or service dogs for real-life tasks by building trust and communication between handler and dog. Keep sessions fun by alternating objects and using enthusiastic encouragement, and you’ll likely see steady progress in your dog’s retrieval abilities.
