Intentional living > impulsive spending. Let's go!
For my low-buy, no-buy year, I’m committing to drastically reducing unnecessary expenses. Over the past few years, I’ve come to realize that I have an unhealthy relationship with money. If I’m being honest, I hate it. I think money, to some extent, is the root of so many problems in the world. Greed is a driving force behind so much of the harm we see, and yet this little piece of paper controls our lives. We can’t eat without it, we can’t live without it, and even enjoying simple hobbies often feels out of reach because of the cost.
Money has always been a trigger for me. Growing up, my family had everything we needed, but it was hard not to feel self-conscious as a kid when others could do or have things that we couldn’t afford. I often felt like the “poor friend.” Ironically, I’ve been on more vacations than most people I knew as a child—thanks to my two amazing aunts, who made it a priority to show me the world. (We’re going to Rio this February!) But that sense of lack and insecurity has stuck with me into adulthood.
Now that I have access to my own money, I’ve gone overboard at times, spending on things I didn’t truly need—whether it’s unnecessary stuff or takeout meals. But I’ve hit a point where I can’t keep doing the same things. I need to think about my future self. Five years from now, I want to feel secure, stable, and safe.
That’s why I’m committing to a low-buy/no-buy 2025. My plan is to cut out unnecessary purchases, cook at home more often, and stop buying backups of products just because they’re “a good deal.” This is about more than saving money—it’s about breaking old habits and creating a healthier, more intentional relationship with money. Future me deserves that.
Here are my refined rules for 2025:
1. **Clothing:** No buying new clothes unless it’s something I genuinely need and don’t already own. Purchases must have a specific purpose.
2. **Skincare:** No new skincare products until I’ve completely finished what I already have. Once a product runs out, I’ll allow myself to replace it.
3. **Takeout:** Limit Uber Eats to twice a month. McDonald’s fries? Maximum twice a week—because they’re my ultimate snack craving.
4. **Perfume:** No more perfumes, body sprays, or oils. I have plenty to last a long time. I’ll use them up, keep my favorite scents, and gift the rest to family members.
5. **Books:** No buying new books until I finish the ones I’m currently reading. After that, I’ll check my local library for any new reads before making a purchase.
6. **Art Supplies:** No buying more art supplies. They’re taking up too much space in my kitchen. I’ll declutter what I don’t need and donate or give away the rest.
7. **Drink Mixes:** No more juice packet mixes until I finish the stash I already have. I love mixing them with seltzer as my soda alternative, but it’s time to use what I’ve stockpiled.
8. **Incense and Aroma Oils:** No buying new incense or aroma oils until I’ve gone through my current collection. I love having a great-smelling space, but I need to use what I already have before adding more.
I’m fully committed to giving this year my best effort. Slip-ups might happen—that’s just life—but I’m determined to stay focused and make real progress. Let’s rock 2025 together!
