6 Questions I Use To Keep My Home Intentional

These are the questions that usually run through my head when I'm decluttering my own home-and they're the same ones I ask clients when they're having a hard time parting with something. It helps slow the process down and take the pressure off making a "right" or "wrong" decision.

Do I actually use it?

Do I love it?

Do I have a place for it?

Would I be ok spending the money to replace it?

Does it mean something to me?

And for clothing specifically-would future me wear this?

Organization isn't about getting rid of everything, it’s about being intentional with what stays.

... Read moreWhen tackling home organization, asking the right questions can transform the clutter-clearing experience from overwhelming to manageable. The six questions highlighted: 'Do I actually use it?', 'Do I love it?', 'Do I have a place for it?', 'Would I be ok spending the money to replace it?', 'Does it mean something to me?', and for clothing, 'Would future me wear this?' — provide a thoughtful framework for intentional living. The first question encourages practical evaluation by focusing on actual use rather than sentimental attachment or impulse. Asking "Do I use it?" helps prioritize items that add value to daily life. Next, considering "Do I love it?" invites emotional reflection, reminding us to keep possessions that bring joy, improving our living environment. Assessing whether an item has a designated spot avoids random accumulation, reinforcing the question "Do I have a place for it?" This maintains organization and minimizes chaos. Financial consideration plays a critical role too; if you wouldn’t replace an item easily, maybe it’s time to let it go. Sentimental value often makes letting go tough. The question "Does it mean something to me?" legitimizes emotional attachments but also challenges you to accept when memories can be preserved in other ways, like photos or keepsakes. For clothing, projecting into the future with "Would future me wear this?" is vital to prevent holding onto outdated or seldom-worn apparel. In practice, this mindset shifts organization away from a purge mentality to intentional living focused on keeping what truly matters. It encourages mindful consumption and storage, transforming your home into a space that supports well-being and purpose. Implementing these questions during decluttering sessions can slow down impulse decisions and reduce stress, allowing thoughtful choices that fit your lifestyle. Ultimately, the goal is not to get rid of everything but to create a home environment that reflects your values and meets your needs. Using these reflective questions as a guide can help maintain an organized, decluttered, and intentional living space that feels good to live in every day.
