Cognitive Distortions

2025/6/25 Edited to

... Read moreI used to think my negative thought patterns were just 'me' – a flaw I couldn't escape. But then I discovered cognitive distortions, and it was like a lightbulb went off! These aren't just random thoughts; they're often deep-seated survival strategies our brains developed during childhood to protect us from pain like rejection or shame, especially if we experienced trauma. Recognizing specific distortions has been incredibly empowering. One I've really struggled with is Catastrophizing. It's when you expect the worst possible outcome in any situation, no matter how small. For instance, if I made a tiny mistake at work, my mind would immediately jump to, 'I'm going to get fired, lose my apartment, and end up homeless!' It felt so real, but looking back, it was rarely the reality. Then there's Emotional Reasoning, which is believing something is true just because you feel it so strongly. 'I feel hopeless, therefore my situation is hopeless.' I remember feeling incredibly anxious about a social event and convincing myself everyone would judge me, so I’d avoid going, even though there was no real evidence for it. My feelings dictated my reality, and it was exhausting. And who hasn't experienced Black and White Thinking? This is seeing everything in extremes – either perfect or a total failure, good or bad, with no middle ground. For years, if I wasn't doing something perfectly, I'd feel like a complete failure. If a friendship had a slight disagreement, I'd think it was completely ruined. It's an exhausting way to view the world, where shades of gray are just not an option! Another common one is Personalization, taking everything personally, even if it has nothing to do with you. If someone looked upset across the room, I'd immediately think, 'Oh no, what did I do?' It made me feel constantly responsible for other people's emotions, which is an unfair burden to carry. This often goes hand-in-hand with Jumping to Conclusions, where you make negative interpretations without any solid evidence. This includes 'mind-reading' (assuming you know what others are thinking negatively about you) and 'fortune-telling' (predicting things will turn out badly). It means I was constantly creating negative narratives in my head that often weren't true. It's tough when you're Disqualifying the Positive. You ignore or reject good experiences, insisting they 'don't count' for some reason. If someone complimented my work, I'd immediately think, 'They're just being polite,' or 'It was just luck.' It blocked me from accepting genuine praise and acknowledging my own achievements. Finally, Should Statements – rigid rules about how you and others 'should' behave. 'I should always be strong,' or 'They shouldn't have done that.' These create a lot of guilt, frustration, and resentment when reality doesn't match these strict, often unrealistic, expectations. Recognizing these cognitive distortions has been a huge step in my trauma healing journey. It helps me challenge those old survival patterns and gradually build a more balanced, present reality. It's not about eradicating them completely, but learning to notice them and choose a different response. You're not alone in these thought patterns; understanding them is the first step to feeling more in control and finding inner peace.
