What curl pattern/texture does my daughter have?

What curl pattern/texture hair does my daughter have?

Ill take any and all hair advice. Her hair always gets dry so fast and I can’t seem to find a product that works well. We wash maybe once a week, but refresh every morning and detangle again with conditioner and a water bottle. She wears a bonnet at night. And gets protective styles every so often.

What are your routines?

When you get braids how do you take care of your hair while they are in?

What products do you use?

What’s your nighttime curl routine?

What’s your wash routine? #curlyhair #Hair #hairadvice #help

... Read moreI totally get where you're coming from! Figuring out your child's curl pattern can feel like solving a puzzle, and dealing with dry hair on top of that is a common challenge for parents of kids with beautiful, voluminous curls. I remember struggling with my own hair, and then later with my niece's, trying to find that perfect routine. It truly makes a difference once you understand the hair type you're working with. Let's dive into the hair type classification system, often shown on a curl type chart, which categorizes hair from Type 1 (straight) all the way to Type 4 (kinky or coily). This chart, especially the 2A-4C diagram, is super helpful. Type 1 (Straight): Hair with no curl. Type 2 (Wavy): This ranges from a loose 'S' shape (2A wavy hair) to more defined waves (2B) and even tighter waves that are almost curly (2C wavy hair). Your daughter's hair likely isn't Type 2 if it's struggling with dryness to this extent, as Type 2s generally retain moisture better. Type 3 (Curly): Here's where we often see defined curly hair ringlets. 3A curly hair type: Large, loose curls, often the size of a jumbo permanent marker. 3B curly hair type examples: Mid-sized curls, like a regular permanent marker. 3C curly hair type: Tight, corkscrew curls, often pencil-sized. These curls can look quite dense and are more prone to dryness. Type 4 (Kinky/Coily): This is where hair tends to be the most voluminous and can appear dry if not properly moisturized. 4A kinky hair: Tightly coiled 'S' pattern, often the size of a crochet needle. 4B kinky hair: A tighter 'Z' pattern, less defined curls and more zig-zag. 4C kinky hair: The tightest curl pattern, often with no defined pattern without product, very dense and prone to extreme shrinkage. This type often shows as 'kinky hair' that needs lots of love to stay hydrated. To figure out your daughter's specific curl pattern, try looking at her hair when it's wet with some conditioner in it, before brushing. The defined curly texture will be more visible. Does it form tight corkscrews (3C)? Or a really tight 'S' or 'Z' pattern (4A/4B/4C)? From your description of her hair being voluminous, dry, and detangled, and seeing those images of her beautiful defined curls, she might be in the 3C to 4B range. Now, about that dryness! Hair with tighter curl patterns, especially 3C, 4A, 4B, and 4C, tends to be drier because the natural oils from the scalp have a harder time traveling down the spiral shape of the hair strand. This means we need to be extra diligent with moisture! Here are some routines and product tips that have worked wonders for us: Product Recommendations: Forget about shampoos and conditioners that might be too harsh. Look for sulfate-free shampoos, or even better, try co-washing (washing with conditioner only) most of the time. Deep conditioners are your best friend – use them at least once a week after her wash. Leave-in conditioners are a must for daily moisture. And for styling, a good curl cream or a light oil can help seal in that moisture and define those gorgeous ringlets. Avoid products with heavy alcohols that can cause more dryness. Wash Routine: My wash routine starts with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo every 1-2 weeks. We then follow up with a generous amount of deep conditioner, letting it sit for 15-30 minutes, sometimes with a heat cap for extra penetration. Detangling happens ONLY with conditioner in the hair, using a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush, starting from the ends and working up. After rinsing, a leave-in conditioner is applied while her hair is still soaking wet. Nighttime Curl Routine: Using a bonnet is a fantastic start! If she's not keen on a bonnet every night, a satin pillowcase is another great option to prevent friction and moisture loss. For longer hair, try the 'pineapple' method – gathering all the hair loosely on top of her head with a satin scrunchie. This helps preserve the curl pattern and prevents tangles. Refreshing Every Morning: Your refresh routine of water and conditioner is spot on! A spray bottle with water and a little leave-in conditioner mixed in works wonders for reactivating curls and adding moisture without a full re-wash. Gently scrunch the product in. Care for Hair in Braids (Protective Styles): When her hair is in braids or other protective styles, it still needs attention! I moisturize the scalp and braids every 2-3 days with a light oil or a braid spray. This prevents dryness and itching. Make sure the braids aren't too tight, as this can cause tension and breakage. Don't forget to cover her hair with a bonnet at night even with braids to protect them. When it's time to take them out, always pre-poo (pre-shampoo treatment with oil or conditioner) to help with detangling and reduce shedding. Finding the right routine for your child's hair is a journey of trial and error, but knowing her curl pattern is the first huge step. With consistent moisture, gentle handling, and the right products, those beautiful curls will thrive!
