I and my boyfriend have a half sibling we share

This is going to sound confusing but stay with me. My boyfriend and I share a half sibling. He and that sibling have the same mom. Me and that same sibling have the same dad. My boyfriend and I are not related to each other at all. Different parents completely.

So now we are talking about the future and it made me think. If we ever have a child together, would our baby be fully blood related to that half sibling since I share a dad with them and my boyfriend shares a mom with them. Or would the baby still only be half related somehow.

This Family Tree Is Confusing Me…

Does anyone understand genetics well enough to explain this in simple terms?

... Read moreFamily genetics can sometimes be puzzling, especially in cases where relationships overlap in unusual ways. In this scenario, you and your boyfriend share a half-sibling, but you are not related to each other. The sibling shares a mother with your boyfriend and a father with you. Considering if your future child would be fully blood-related to this sibling is an interesting question. Genetically speaking, each person inherits half of their DNA from their mother and half from their father. Your child with your boyfriend would inherit 50% from you and 50% from your boyfriend. Since the half-sibling shares your father and your boyfriend’s mother, your child would receive DNA related to that sibling from both parents but not entirely the same segments. From your side, your child shares DNA with the sibling through their common father, and from your boyfriend’s side, through their common mother. This means your child is related to the sibling on both parental sides, potentially making the genetic relationship closer than a typical half-sibling connection. However, the child would not be considered a 'full sibling' to the half-sibling because that term applies when two individuals share both parents. The child would be something closer to a cousin or a double half-sibling – sharing genetic material through both parents but in different segments. Understanding genetics in blended families is important, as it shapes perceptions of family bonds and inheritance. If you want a more precise assessment, genetic counseling or a DNA test can provide detailed results about the degree of relatedness. This complex family tree highlights how genetics can create unique connections beyond conventional family structures, offering a richer appreciation for how families form in diverse ways.
