Filling the raised-bed

Filled my first raised-bed. It’s 4x8x2 which ended up using way more dirt than I anticipated. I laid cardboard for the first layer and followed that with stick and logs from the woods. After that I I added a lot of leaves and some sand. I added about a foot or dirt that I dug from the woods and water it good to help it settle. I topped it off with fertilizer-free organic soil. I didn’t fill it all the to the top so that I can keep topping off for the first year as I imagined things will settle more.

I plan to get two more, but will go ahead and plant some cooler weather veggies that I’ve started by seed already. I’ll order the other two soon and prep it for April plantings. #raisedplanter #raisedbed #gardening 📍 City/Country: SC

... Read moreCreating a raised bed garden is an excellent way to grow your own vegetables and plants. When preparing your raised bed, consider the importance of layering materials to enhance soil quality and drainage. Begin with cardboard to suppress weeds, followed by organic materials like sticks and logs to promote beneficial soil organisms. Adding leaves contributes to the organic matter that enriches the soil and helps retain moisture. For climate adaptation, choose suitable crops for your region. Cooler weather vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, and peas can be planted early in the season. If you plan on expanding your garden, ensure that your soil is equipped to handle the added weight and volume. Using a mix of organic soil with added compost can improve nutrient content. Regular monitoring of your raised bed will help address settling issues. As the organic materials break down, you may need to replenish the soil to keep your plants healthy and productive. By following these practices, you’ll create a flourishing garden that serves your culinary needs for seasons to come.

An infographic titled 'WRONG DEPTH, WASTED ROOTS' illustrates optimal raised bed depths for various crops. It shows 6-inch beds for lettuce, radishes, herbs; 12-inch for peppers, bush beans, cucumbers; 18-inch for tomatoes, carrots, potatoes; and 24-inch for asparagus, sweet potatoes, and artichokes, emphasizing matching depth to root needs.
Pick the right height for a raised bed.
Every raised bed the same height means some crops get too little soil and others get more than they'll ever use. Each crop's root system needs a specific depth. Too shallow and roots hit bottom, fork, and starve the plant. Too deep and you're paying for soil that nothing reaches.
