How to hear God's voice

Actively seek and prioritize God's voice

The Bible shows that God's voice can be heard more clearly when setting aside focused, quiet time.

Psalm 46:10 states, "Be still, and know that I am God." Intentional silence is key to hearing from God in a loud and busy world.

Proverbs 2:2-5 encourages believers to "incline your ear to wisdom" and search for understanding as they would for hidden treasure. This suggests a determined, active pursuit of God's counsel.

2. Believe that God wants to speak

Hearing from God begins with faith in His character and His desire to communicate.

Hebrews 11:6 states that without faith, it is impossible to please God and that anyone who comes to Him "must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him".

Jeremiah 33:3 contains God's promise: "Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known." This reinforces that God is responsive to those who call out to Him.

3. Study the Bible

The Bible is the primary way that God speaks to his people.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 teaches that "all Scripture is God-breathed" and useful for teaching, correcting, and training in righteousness.

The Holy Spirit, sent by the Father, helps believers understand what they read in the Bible and how to apply it to their lives (John 14:26).

4. Obey promptly

The Bible connects listening and hearing with obedience.

John 10:27 says, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." Listening to God is not passive but leads to an active commitment to follow Him.

Deuteronomy 28:1 promises that obedience to God's voice will bring blessings: "If you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments... the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth".
