A tradition we started

Something we started doing every year a couple years ago was donating gifts that we don’t use much anymore before Christmas. This benefits people in need who can’t afford gifts and it also makes space in our home for the new ones. My kids receive. Instead of bringing them to Goodwill or other places where they will charge for the toys, we opt for donating to women’s shelters, homeless shelters , and daycare centers. This fills our cup knowing a kid will use the items and the parent can feel a little less stressed.

... Read moreDonating gifts before Christmas has become a heartfelt tradition for many families who wish to make the holiday season more meaningful and charitable. By choosing to give away toys and items that are no longer used, families not only reduce clutter at home but also provide much-needed support to vulnerable communities such as women’s shelters, homeless shelters, and daycare centers. This practice helps ensure that children who might otherwise receive no gifts during the holidays get to experience the joy of receiving something special. Additionally, donating directly to shelters rather than general places like Goodwill can sometimes reduce costs for recipients and ensure the donations go straight to those who truly need them. Many families find emotional fulfillment in knowing their contributions help reduce the financial and emotional stress on parents during a challenging time of year. If you're considering adopting this tradition, start by gathering toys and gifts that are in good condition but no longer needed. Next, research local organizations that accept donations of toys and children’s items, including women's shelters and homeless shelters. Contact them to confirm what they need and donation guidelines. This thoughtful approach maximizes the impact of your donations and fosters a sense of community and kindness. Moreover, involving children in the donation process can teach valuable lessons about empathy, generosity, and the importance of helping others. This simple act creates lasting memories and instills the true spirit of the holiday season in young hearts. Extending the tradition year after year can cultivate a family culture of giving that resonates beyond just the holidays, encouraging lifelong kindness and social responsibility.
