I loved my dogsโฆuntil I had a baby ๐
No one warned me how hard it would be to have a newborn and a dog.
The barking during nap time, the hair everywhere, the constant need for attentionโฆ it was a lot. I love my dog, but in those early postpartum weeks, even the sound of his nails on the floor had me losing it. ๐
Postpartum hormones are no joke, and patience? Yeah, that left the chat for a while. But we made it through, and now heโs back to being my favorite furry child (most days). ๐พ

I totally get it, that 'drove me absolutely crazy postpartum' feeling is SO real when you add a dog into the newborn chaos! There were days I almost regretted getting dogs, not because I didn't love them, but because I felt like I was drowning in the sheer overwhelm. If you're a new mom struggling with your beloved pets, know you're not alone. Here are some of the 'homemade' solutions and practical tips that helped me survive those chaotic early weeks. 1. Taming the Barking Monster (and other noises!): My dog's barking during nap time was my personal hell. While I couldn't make a 'homemade' muzzle, I focused on creating a 'homemade' peaceful environment. We invested in white noise machines for the baby's room, which helped mask external sounds. For my dog, I started giving him a special, high-value chew toy (like a frozen Kong stuffed with peanut butter) only during the baby's nap time. It became a positive association for quiet time. I even tried a diluted, pet-safe homemade calming spray with lavender essential oil on his bedding, which seemed to take the edge off his anxiety. 2. Winning the Battle Against Pet Hair: The hair! Oh my goodness, the hair was everywhere, multiplying faster than I could clean. Beyond daily brushing (which is a must!), I adopted a few 'homemade' cleaning hacks. I found that wrapping packing tape around an old toilet paper roll made an incredibly effective, quick lint roller for clothes and furniture. For floors, I'd sprinkle a bit of baking soda before vacuuming to neutralize odors and lift hair more easily. A microfiber mop dampened with a homemade solution of water and white vinegar also worked wonders on hard floors, picking up pet hair surprisingly well. 3. Providing 'Homemade' Enrichment and Attention: My dogs thrive on attention, and with a newborn, that's a scarce commodity. Instead of feeling guilty, I got creative. 'Homemade' puzzle feeders (like kibble hidden in a crumpled towel or a cardboard box) kept them mentally stimulated. Even just 10-15 minutes of focused, active play with a toy, or simply sitting on the floor scratching their ears while the baby was awake, made a huge difference to their mood and energy levels. It was about quality over quantity. 4. Creating Safe & Structured 'Homemade' Spaces: This isn't about DIY crafts, but about intentionally designing your home for harmony. We created designated 'safe zones' for both the baby and the dog using baby gates. The dog had a cozy spot where he could retreat for peace, and the baby had a playpen where she could safely roll around without dog interference. For introductions, I'd let the dog sniff a blanket the baby had used before they met face-to-face. This 'homemade' preparation helped normalize the baby's scent and presence. 5. The Ultimate 'Homemade' Remedy: Self-Compassion: Honestly, the biggest 'homemade' remedy for me was self-compassion. There were days when I felt like I was failing everyone โ the baby, the dogs, my partner, myself. Taking just 5 minutes for myself, perhaps with a homemade cup of herbal tea, to just breathe and acknowledge how hard it was, helped reset my patience levels. Remember, you're navigating a massive life change, and your pets are adapting too. Give yourself grace. You're doing an amazing job!

I feel this 10000%. I feel guilty but it was even to the point where we looked to rehome our dog. Thankfully we didnโt but tbh we still are on the fence about it. We have to keep her in her crate most of the time because she is just so unaware around the baby and has even knocked her over while she was sitting and crawling. :(
