Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy
11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!"
4 When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed.
15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him-and he was a Samaritan.
17 Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?
18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?"
18 Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well."
Reading the story of Jesus healing the ten lepers from Luke 17:11-19 always strikes a deep chord with me. It’s more than just a miracle; it's a profound lesson in human nature and divine grace. When I picture the scene, I often imagine it vividly, much like the biblical illustrations I've seen – Jesus extending his hand, perhaps to a kneeling man, while others joyfully run off into the desert landscape, cleansed and free. In those times, leprosy wasn't just a physical ailment; it was a social death sentence. People afflicted with it were outcast, forced to live in isolation, declared unclean. Imagine the sheer desperation of these ten men, calling out to Jesus from a distance, their voices probably filled with a mixture of hope and fear. And then, the miraculous intervention – a simple command from Jesus, "Go, show yourselves to the priests," and as they went, they were cleansed. Can you even fathom the joy, the overwhelming relief they must have felt? Their lives, once shattered, were suddenly restored. Yet, the part that truly makes me pause is that out of ten, only one returned to give thanks. And that one was a Samaritan! This detail is so crucial. Samaritans were often despised by Jews, yet here was a foreigner, an outsider, who recognized the magnitude of what had been given and felt compelled to express his gratitude. It makes me wonder, why did the other nine not return? Were they so consumed by their newfound freedom that they forgot the source of their blessing? Or did they simply feel entitled to the healing? For me, this story is a powerful mirror. It makes me reflect on how often I might take blessings for granted. Do I pause to acknowledge the good things in my life, and more importantly, the source of those blessings? It’s not just about thanking God, but also about appreciating the people and circumstances that bring positivity into our lives. The Samaritan's act of kneeling before Jesus, praising God in a loud voice, wasn't just an act of piety; it was a testament to a grateful heart and a recognition of true faith. Jesus' words, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well," highlight that his faith wasn't just in the healing, but in recognizing the Healer. This story reminds me to cultivate a heart of gratitude daily, to not just receive blessings but to truly acknowledge them and give thanks, just like that one thankful leper.
