Mental Health Awareness Month

This month speaks the language of quiet battles—of minds that carry more than they show.

Some of us are still learning how to sit with what happened, how to name it without letting it swallow us whole. Healing isn’t clean. It doesn’t arrive on time. And some days, it doesn’t feel like it’s coming at all.

They say it starts with step one. But no one really talks about how heavy that first step can be—how it asks you to move when you’re not sure you believe in where you’re going.

So here’s the truth, unpolished and real:

Today, I’m not okay.

I don’t know when I will be.

But I’m still here, even in the uncertainty.

And maybe, for now, that has to be enough.

... Read moreMay is recognized globally as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to breaking the silence and stigma that surround mental health issues. One in four people will experience some form of mental illness each year, yet myths and misunderstandings persist. For example, many believe mental illness is a sign of weakness or something one can just "snap out of," which is far from the truth. During this month, campaigns focus on educating the public to overcome discrimination and patronizing attitudes towards those suffering. Depression, anxiety, and other conditions are often invisible wounds that carry distress without obvious physical signs. This invisibility can sometimes lead to people feeling isolated or ashamed, further hindering their healing process. From personal experience, acknowledging these 'quiet battles' is crucial. The first step toward recovery might seem daunting, especially when hope feels uncertain. It’s important to recognize that healing is not linear—some days will feel heavier than others, and setbacks are part of the process. What has helped me most is creating a safe space to openly talk about mental health without judgment. Whether through poetry, creative healing, or simply sharing stories, these activities can foster connection and reduce feelings of shame. Communities and forums dedicated to such expression provide solidarity and remind us that we're not alone. Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder to be patient with ourselves and others. Supportive environments that promote understanding and empathy can break down obstacles and negative opinions that often surround mental illness. Ultimately, embracing the journey, even in uncertainty, is a powerful act of courage and resilience.
