What even is LABOR?

Throughout pregnancy, involuntary contractions of the uterus begin to occur, these are known as Braxton Hicks contractions. They occur irregularly and are thought to be “practice contractions”, but

they are not actually part of labor.

For labor to start, cervical ripening needs to be happening. A woman is usually said to be in labor when regular, strong contractions lead to effacement and dilatation of the cervix.

Cervical ripening refers to the softening of the cervix that occurs before labor. Without these changes, the cervix cannot dilate! It occurs in response to oestrogen, relaxin and prostaglandins breaking down cervical connective tissue with prostaglandins being of particular importance!

Prostaglandins are produced by the placenta. But they can also come from other things! This is why they often use Prostaglandins in the form of cervidil to induce labor. Another natural source of prostaglandins is semen, which is why they say- getting the baby out is the same as getting the baby in!

Things that soften and ripen the cervix won’t start labor but that is necessary as the first step before dilation can happen!

... Read moreNavigating pregnancy comes with so many questions, and one of the most common, and often confusing, is about contractions. Many of us experience those 'practice' contractions, known as Braxton Hicks, and immediately wonder, "Is this it? Is labor starting?" The biggest question often is: how long does Braxton Hicks last? From my experience and what I've learned, Braxton Hicks contractions are typically short-lived and irregular. Unlike true labor contractions, they don't follow a pattern, nor do they progressively get stronger or closer together. You might feel a tightening across your belly, almost as if your uterus is clenching, but it usually comes and goes. They might last anywhere from 30 seconds to about two minutes, but the key is that they're sporadic. You could have a few in an hour, then none for the rest of the day. This unpredictability is a major clue that it's likely not true labor. They often occur more frequently in the evenings or after physical activity, but usually subside with rest or hydration. So, what do they actually feel like? For me, Braxton Hicks felt more like a general tightening or pressure, not pain. It was uncomfortable, for sure, but I could still talk and move through them. They didn't wrap around my back or intensify with time. My midwife always advised me to try changing positions, drinking a big glass of water, or taking a warm bath. More often than not, these simple actions would make them fade away. If they continued or intensified after trying these methods, that's when I knew to pay closer attention. The main difference, as the main article touches upon, is their effect on the cervix. WHAT EVEN IS LABOR? True labor contractions are powerful because they cause your cervix to ripen, efface (thin out), and dilate (open). Braxton Hicks contractions, however, do not lead to these critical cervical changes. This is why listening to your body and noting the pattern and intensity of your contractions is so important. If contractions become regular, stronger, closer together, and don't ease up with activity changes, hydration, or rest, those are the signs that your body is moving towards actual labor and the exciting process of cervical dilatation is beginning. It can be a bit nerve-wracking trying to figure it all out, especially as your due date approaches. Always remember that if you're ever unsure about the nature of your contractions, or if you're experiencing any other concerning symptoms like fluid leakage, bleeding, or decreased fetal movement, it's always best to contact your healthcare provider. They are there to help you differentiate between these 'practice' rounds and the real start of your baby's birth journey. Trust your instincts, but don't hesitate to seek professional advice for peace of mind.
