What’s in my labor bag

As a chronic over-packer, these are all the items I'm taking to the hospital for my second baby... honestly you don't need much! I was so stressed and way overpacked the first time. I didn't even need half of it. Most things are available at the hospital and they will load you up with supplies to take home (hence the extra bag).

Keep in mind, this is just my opinion - you should take whatever you need to be comfortable and anything you use daily. If you will feel more at ease having all your stuff, take it with! For me, it's less stressful to have less stuff to worry about.

But you definitely don't need to buy a ton of extra stuff just for the hospital.

... Read morePacking a labor bag can often feel overwhelming, especially when preparing for a major life event like childbirth. The key is to focus on essentials that ensure comfort and convenience without overburdening yourself with unnecessary items. Hospitals typically provide many postpartum necessities such as mesh underwear, pads, Tucks, ice packs, abdominal binders, breast pumps, peri bottles, and basic toiletries including toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, and lotion. Bringing extra items like a labor robe, cozy outfits with easy access for skin-to-skin contact, comfy shoes like Crocs, nursing bras, and extra underwear can add significant comfort. For baby, pack a few outfits suitable for photos and coming home, along with a nail file and swaddle. Don’t forget personal care items such as nipple balm, hairbrush, hair ties, and deodorant to help you feel refreshed. If technology helps you relax or pass time during labor, consider bringing chargers with long cables, personal fans, headphones, or a tablet device. Eye masks and favorite snacks can make waiting periods more pleasant. Additional thoughtful items include a blanket and pillow from home, your own water bottle if you prefer, extra glasses or contacts and solution, and any specialized medications with your doctor’s approval. Some mothers also bring name or announcement props and special pacifiers if they want specific ones for their newborn. Postpartum support items like abdominal binders or belly bands, breast pump parts, and peri bottles may be useful as well but check with your hospital since many provide these. By focusing on what truly matters and recognizing what the hospital supplies, you can avoid the common pitfall of overpacking. The goal is to reduce stress and have everything you need for a comfortable, safe, and memorable labor and delivery experience.
