Are you curious what you need to birth at home?

Everything here is what I have for my home birth/free birth! The only thing I don’t have pictured is big towels, receiving blankets, and a baby scale!

I’m 38 weeks now and so excited to finally have all my supplies and have them organized!

Items I have and what they’re for-

Gallon ziplock bags: I will use this to store my placenta.

Black trash bags: to throw away all the under pads and any other trash.

Hydrogen peroxide: gets out blood incase any gets on rugs/carpet.

Measuring tape: measure babies head and length.

Cord clamp: to clamp the umbilical cord.

Bulb: I have this as a just incase if baby is having trouble crying after birth.

Cord cutter/scissors: to cut the umbilical cord.

Overnight and large pads: I will use these after the first few days when bleeding slows down.

Period underwear: I like these when I’m still bleeding more but not as heavy and right after birth.

Extra long pads: I will use these with the mesh underwear right after birth when bleeding is heaviest.

Mesh underwear: as a comfortable underwear option that I can throw away in the first few days.

Peri bottle: I use this after going to the bathroom for the first weeks when you don’t want to wipe.

Waterproof sheets: this is to lay down on the carpet and rugs or bed underneath the pads as extra protection.

Under pads: to lay down where I will be pushing or to follow me around if my water breaks.

... Read morePreparing for a home birth is such an exciting and empowering journey! As I hit 38 weeks, organizing my home birth supplies has truly made me feel ready and confident for whatever comes next. While having a list of items is a great start, truly understanding how to use and set up these birth supplies can make all the difference. When it comes to home birth set up ideas, thinking beyond just putting items in a basket is key. I've focused on creating a serene and functional birthing space. First, consider where you feel most comfortable. For me, it's about having a quiet corner that can easily be protected. Those waterproof sheets aren't just for under you; they're fantastic for covering any furniture or flooring you want to safeguard. Layer them with old towels and then your under pads for maximum protection. Think about accessibility too – having your essential labor supplies like your peri bottle, extra pads, and a water bottle within arm's reach is crucial. I also plan to have some comforting elements like soft lighting, my favorite music, and snacks readily available for energy. The immediate post-birth period, and certainly extending to 24 days postpartum and beyond, requires specific care. While the initial rush focuses on the baby, remembering your own recovery is paramount. Those extra-long pads and mesh underwear are lifesavers for the heaviest bleeding right after birth. As bleeding slows, transitioning to overnight and then period underwear offers more comfort and discretion. Don't underestimate the power of your peri bottle – warm water for cleansing after each bathroom trip is soothing and promotes healing without irritation. Beyond the physical, preparing meals in advance or setting up a support system for the first few weeks can drastically ease the postpartum transition. Remember, your recovery is a marathon, not a sprint, and having these postpartum supplies organized will help you focus on bonding with your new baby. And speaking of baby, whether your little one arrives at 38 weeks or closer to 42 weeks pregnant, being prepared for their arrival is a joyful task. Having everything from receiving blankets to a baby scale (if you choose to use one) ready ensures a smooth welcome. Items like the cord clamp and scissors, while hopefully used by a medical professional (if you have one present), are important to have in your home birth kit. It’s all about feeling fully equipped for that magical moment your baby enters the world, knowing you have everything close by to meet their immediate needs. Having all your birth supplies neatly organized and knowing their purpose truly brings peace of mind. It allows you to surrender to the process and focus on the incredible experience of bringing your baby earthside, surrounded by comfort and readiness. I hope these insights help you in preparing for your own beautiful home birth!
