"Before Ateliers," from Tea Ceremony to Fashion, and the Paintbrush Lines That Define the Oneness of Two Ateliers by CHATNAPA x CÉRÉMONIALE Matcha Atelier
Chatnapa, a fashion brand that uses flatness to create complexity through structure, fabrics, and small detels that are intentionally thought out, makes clothes a combination of fashion, art, and practicality. While CÉRÃ MONIALE Matcha Atelier is a matcha bar that turns tea into a ritual by culling ceremonial grade matcha, making a traditional fresh brew, and serving it in a minimalist space that cuts out the necessities, leaving only the taste, rhythm, and calmness of tea in contemporary ways. Despite the different sciences, they clearly share one thing: "Atelier" as an area of experimentation, practice, and value moderation. Concrete.
The "Before Ateliers" exhibition began with the exchange of six core values between the two ateliers over a period of six months, from the beginning to the present, and the whole process was told as the main narrative of the exhibition, not only what was accomplished, but "what was forming."
CHATNAPA converts the concept of tea ceremony and teahouse atmosphere into a 6-look dress that reflects both stillness, balance and movement through fabric structure, drape and sewing details tied to the elements of tea making. Meanwhile, CÉRÉMONIALE offers its own foundation through objects and inspiration from private art collections.
Another key element is the calligraphy works by Setsuhi Shiraishi that come in to fill the dimensions of lines and empty space to the exhibition, through the words "Yuiitsu-Muni" that mean oneness, cannot be repeated, as well as the meeting of two ateliers this time, and "Nichinichi Kore Koujitsu," written in gold ink, reminding of the value of day-to-day living.
The interesting thing about this exhibition is not just the combination of "fashion" and "tea," but the interpretation of these two sciences through the same perspective as a practice that requires time, determination, and diminution of unnecessary things to remain the essence, whether it is the shape of the garment or the taste of tea.
