HR is not your friend! #careercoach #mentalhealth

2025/1/18 Edited to

... Read moreThat viral example of HR's response to an employee stress survey truly hit home for me, echoing the sentiment that 'HR is not your friend!' It’s a stark, albeit satirical, illustration of why we need to be incredibly careful when navigating workplace issues, especially something as deeply personal as stress. Many of us implicitly trust HR to be our advocate, but their primary loyalty, as that 'Dear Team' memo starkly reminds us, is to the company's interests, not necessarily the individual employee's. So, what exactly is workplace stress, and why is it so prevalent? For me, workplace stress isn't just about having a busy day. It’s that constant, nagging feeling of being overwhelmed, depleted, and often unappreciated. It’s when the demands of your job consistently exceed your capacity to cope, whether that’s due to workload, lack of support, or a toxic environment. This kind of stress can manifest physically as headaches, fatigue, or even digestive issues, and mentally as anxiety, irritability, and a general lack of motivation. It impacts your life far beyond the 9-to-5, seeping into your personal relationships and overall well-being. From my own experience and observing others, the common causes of stress in the workplace are varied. Sometimes, it's the obvious culprits: impossible deadlines, excessive workloads, or working under a micromanaging boss. I've personally dealt with the pressure of constantly shifting priorities without clear communication, which left me feeling like I was always playing catch-up. Other times, the causes are more insidious, like a lack of control over one's tasks, unclear job descriptions, or a feeling of stagnation due to limited growth opportunities. The emotional labor involved in dealing with difficult clients or colleagues can also be a massive drain. And let's not forget the stress that comes from a lack of recognition or feeling undervalued for your contributions. The 'Update on Stress Survey' scenario, where 'employees who indicated significant stress' were let go, is an extreme but powerful example of how a company might, in its pursuit of 'fostering a healthy and supportive work environment,' completely miss the mark or even act against employee well-being. Understanding the 'HR is not your friend' mantra is crucial for protecting yourself. While HR professionals can offer valuable resources and support, their ultimate goal is to mitigate risk for the company. This means that reporting certain types of stress, especially if it points to systemic issues within the company, might be viewed through a lens of legal or financial liability rather than pure empathy. If you're experiencing significant stress at work, it's wise to consider your options carefully. Document everything, especially if you're dealing with specific incidents or patterns of behavior. Seek support from trusted friends, family, or external professionals like therapists or career coaches who can offer unbiased advice. Sometimes, the best way to deal with overwhelming stress is to seek a new environment that genuinely aligns with your personal values and well-being. Your mental health is paramount, and advocating for it, even when it means navigating the complexities of corporate structures, is an essential part of a healthy career journey. Don't let your 'feelings about stress at work' be weaponized; empower yourself with knowledge and strategic action.
