Officially my favorite Jamaican restaurant in San Diego 🌴🍗🌶️ Island Spice Jamaican Restaurant has been around for over 30 years, and I’ve been hearing about it forever from family and friends who are regulars—but I finally made time to check it out, and I honestly don’t know why I waited this long.. The owners are so sweet!
As someone born and raised in San Diego, these are the kind of spots that only locals know about, and they deserve way more recognition. Go support 💛
Island Spice Jamaican Restaurant // Authentic Caribbean Food
📍6109 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92115
Having visited Island Spice Jamaican Restaurant myself, I can attest to the welcoming atmosphere that truly makes you feel at home. The oxtail stands out with its slow-braised tenderness, bathed in a savory and slightly sweet brown gravy that’s quintessentially Jamaican. Pairing it with their perfectly spiced rice and peas and caramelized plantains completes the experience. What I appreciate most is how the portions never hold back, making it perfect for hearty appetites or sharing. Their curry chicken offers a vibrant blend of warm spices with just the right kick of heat, delivering an authentic and aromatic taste. While some might find the rice a touch softer than expected, this didn’t take away from the rich flavors dominating the rest of the meal. This restaurant’s longevity and strong community ties prove its dedication to quality and authenticity. As a San Diego local, finding such a treasure feels like uncovering a secret that deserves to be shared far beyond the neighborhood. For anyone craving genuine Jamaican food with a friendly vibe and generous servings, Island Spice is definitely worth the visit.
